Re: Computer Help Thread

Usually...

A new battery can be faulty too, though not likely. All the same, easy & cheap to test with a fresh battery.

Re: Computer Help Thread

Usually happens when the cmos battery is about to fail (the little round battery on the motherboard) and the bios loses it's settings (date&time, boot order, etc). Cheap and easy to replace... Most computers run just fine with the factory default bios settings, so no worries. Only if you've made...

Re: NFS:MW directX problem

Very offtopic but,

As far as I know, no you can't. Eastore (eastore.ea.com) only has Carbon and Pro Street (and shift pre-orded atm) as a digital download. Not sure if Most Wanted ever was available there, but it isn't there at the moment.

Ps. No warez discussion here...

Re: Computer Show-off

Fair enough, a decent level backup though not quite RAID level. Much better than most people though, I would imagine. Very few people (home users) make full drive backups daily.

Re: Computer Show-off

Okay, but if possible/supported by your motherboard, you could consider a RAID-1 system drive for increased failure tolerance. Especially considering the drives are not new...

Re: Computer Show-off

Looks good, but why three 74GB 10k disks? Surely you are not considering RAID-5 for a system drive (RAID-5 has very poor write performance though the 10k disks might compensate a bit for that) You'd be much better of with RAID-1 setup; no performance hit, slightly improved read speeds and same level...

Re: What Phone Do You Have?

I recently "upgraded" my Nokia N81 to an N86, and it turns out to be a pretty decent entertainment phone (I still keep my trusty E71 for work, it's near perfection as a business phone). OLED display for energy efficiency and is viewable in direct sunlight aswell. 8Mpix autofocus camera wit...

Re: Computer Help Thread

Hmm... might think about backing up my music collection now that I have an external. But is corruption less likely on non-system drives used just to store data? Depends on the root cause of the problem. Generally speaking corruption should not occur at all on a healthy system. Usual causes are fail...

It's a decent midrange card. Nothing superb, but should play almost anything at mid-to-high gfx settings.

Propably a problem with the DVD-drive itself. Do you have problems with other DVDs?

A new one won't cost much though...

Re: Computer Help Thread

Maybe not completely fluently (depends on other specs too), but should run ok atleast. From ATI side you could consider some 4850 model which offers roughly the same performance (or 4870 depending on budget but would be faster than 9800gtx, they have gotten a bit cheaper now that 4890 is out).

Re: Computer Help Thread

Most likely some dust in the pci slot or the card connector surfaces. Doesn't take much to malfunction due to static electricity from dust.

A trip to Germany, is not beyond the realm of possibility for me. The timing would have to be at vacation time obviously since it would take atleast a week long trip.

Re: Just want to talk? Come here.

@ vellu: Only 62 degree difference? We usually get a difference of -52 C (with windchill) in the harshest of winter to +32 C during the summer. 80 degree difference for the win. I don't know about windchill factor, it isn't something we here in Northern Finland even think about. It exists no doubt,...

Re: Just want to talk? Come here.

Greetings from the land of grand opposites! A respectable 62 deg C difference in temperature from January to June! It's the beginning of my two week summer holiday and the weather couldn't be any better. Personally though, I'd rather be in the winter extreme: atleast then you can put more clothes on...

Re: Computer Help Thread

The pin side should obviously not have any "grey matter". The other (smooth) side needs a new layer of thermal paste, if the original one has "rotted away". As said before, be sure to completely clean the old compound off first before applying the new layer. A very thin layer is ...

So last week i took out my heatsink and such for a routine check-up and found that some of the grey compound has gone away. I didn't think much of it so, i put everything back, go into bios and find that my temps suddenly skyrocketed to 150 degrees F. You need to apply a new layer of therma...

Yeah, I watched HD but isn't that what it's made for >_<? And I didn't use it that much. I'd be spewing if it's a motherboard issue because it cost me $310 >_< It still detects the hardware, but the hardware won't work =-S Have your tried switching the card to a different PCI-slot (if available)?

Re: Computer Help Thread

I'm able to enable or disable the onboard LAN. It just has no effect once Windows takes over. Could it be a corrupted chipset driver? Btw, do the lan socket indicator led's light up when you plug in a cable (atleast one should, even when windows isn't even booted up yet). If not, then the connector...

Re: Computer Help Thread

Odd indeed. Failed back connectors usually does mean a soon completely dead board.

You could try resetting the board BIOS to factory defaults, maybe it got a bit of static during cleaning... (not likely though).

If you are absolutely sure the aftermarket modules work with your Dell, then why not. Sometimes "big brand" laptops are really picky on what ram modules work with them.
