Re: Vehicle Types
Well, there are some small gains to be had, especially on certain cars (like mine) where the intake plumbing is about eight metres long. So a pod filter setup might give me about 1hp, or slightly more if was running a better motor. But the only thing you will really gain is induction noise My rusted muffler makes enough noise already so . . .
Re: Vehicle Types
Well... I think it helps more with response and midrange power than top end... it's just basically removing restrictions... so it'll help it breathe easy, and you don't get that asthmatic sound. Mind you, a friend just fitted a better airfilter to his elantra and it's got the standard airbox and it doesn't sound half bad. It gives a nice grr... rather than it's former wheeze.

Hmm . . . not really. Actually you have it the wrong way around.baumaxx1 wrote:Well... I think it helps more with response and midrange power than top end... it's just basically removing restrictions...
A slight restriction in the intake is better for low-midrange power and torque. It's at the top end when you need the full-flow. The standard intake is designed to provide just the right amount of air, not too much and not too little, whilst also being as quiet as possible.
Re: Vehicle Types
Interesting... everything I've learnt has been more air + more fuel makes good. Could air-fuel ratios have an effect? I know with intercoolers, if they are larger, you can get a pressure drop and more turbo lag, so you need to pick carefully... Is that sorta the same? But a highly restrictive setup -> less restrictive helps obviously with response to an extent right?
And yeah, stockies have to meet noise, emissions and efficiency requirements, lol.

Re: Vehicle Types
Despite what people say, many pod filters or K&N type units are less free flowing than the original air box. They are also more prone to water ingress and to heat soak.
At low RPM the larger amount of air is irrelivent as the flow is more than enough to maintain a correct fuel/air ratio. At high RPM a larger volume of air is needed and this is where freer flowing intake manifolds and other induction modifications are useful.
As for presure drop with intercoolers, the only time you will ever experience significant pressure drop is if an intercooler is far too large and free-flowing for the turbocharger it is connected to. In this case a small volume of air flows into a large space, with a long distance to travel, and the pressure drops drastically. One of the most important parts of building turbocharged engines is to ballance the turbocharger flow with the intercooler size.

To be an exotic, you gotta save money. They're really cool same time fascinating to drive. Downside, they're expensive.
