I'm starting to think that. They demoted the NFS name to the back of the title (essentially making it a subtitle) and on some promotional materials the NFS name doesn't even appear in the title at all, just the NFS logo.
I think Slightly Mad is trying to draw a divide between their Shift games and the NFS brand, with EA only keeping the ties to the NFS series for the sake of giving the game something recognizable when on store shelves. As it is I think Shift is a pretty harsh tangent away from what I'd consider an NFS game anyway so this does seem likely.
Shift 2: an NFS game in name only?

Well even ProStreet is a different breed of game than what you'd expect from NFS.
But I think this is a more recent decision. EA is probably trying to define NFS in a narrower scope and retains the name on Shift 2 to tie it to its forerunner.

LOL
I have to agree. There are plenty of articles about how Shift is nothing more than another studios game with NFS stamped on it. Gotta love studio buy-outs. Less competition for the market means more of the same.

Not to dig up old threads but I did a bit more research into that.Nitrodemon McLaren wrote:Can you say... V-Rally?
V-Rally isn't even an NFS game, it's just a game that bears the NFS name (it's not called Need for Speed: V-Rally in every region either). The V-Rally name even got passed to the Test Drive series later on.
So I don't think it should count.

It was simply called V-Rally here and it was developed by Eden Studios (Test Drive) and published by Infogrames. So yeah, no EA involved at all.
