If possible, I always prefer non-Steam versions of games.
Anyway, I guess they can start charging DLC for PC now too ...

Happens a lot in the gaming industry - you'll also find some extremely expensive in-store games for at least half the price on steam.
For instance, I picked up Mass Effect (1) for around about $20 somewhere, and at the other major retailers it was all still $100. It's up to them when they want to mark them down to bargain prices, so it's worth searching for a good deal no matter what game your after, it will save you a lot of money in most cases.

True. All stores online or offline have discount items.
Personally I haven't bought a physical media game (for PC) since I started using Steam. And propably won't in the future either. Steam it's just so effortless to use, buy->install->play. No need to mess with DVD's which might fail, drm's also work seamlessly (that is, one doesn't even notice it's there). Re-sale value has no meaning for me, so why would I want DVD's lying around.
Seasonal discounts are also fun on Steam (current Holiday Sale 20. Dec to 2. Jan) where one can one find really, really good deals. For example "Valve Complete Pack" for 49,99 for all Valve games. Yes, ALL OF THEM (HL, HL2, TF, CS, DOD, L4F, Portal, etc. etc.)

Yeah not to get too off topic, but Steam do have some extremely good value bundles.
Thing for me personally is practicality - my internet can't cope with big downloads such as a game off steam, so it really isn't applicable for me. The other bonus a lot of people find with retailers is this comfort in having a physical copy of the game.
