Hmm, I just tested it and it worked fine for me. If you insist on using the java app then I suggest you ensure your java installation is up-to-date - download it direct from Sun here: http://www.java.com/en/download/index.jsp

Otherwise, get yourself a *real* chat client, like mIRC, Trillian, xChat, HydraIRC.. there are quite a few around. My recommendations would be Trillian or mIRC.

Go to Trillian>Trillian Preferences>Identites & Connections. Create a new identity - this is like a profile to allow multiple people to have their own set of settings.

Next, add a new connection. A small popup menu appears, choose IRC..

Add these settings, then click Change..

Add these settings, which will get join joining the nfsunlimited channel when you connect..

Click Save Settings, then click Connect on the previous screen to join the channel.

These settings will automatically join #nfsunlimited whenever you start Trillian. You'll also note that Trillian can also handle MSN, ICQ, AIM, Jabber (GoogleTalk) and a bunch of other IM mediums.

See you in there!

hmm....

ok this isnt working... the problem is with the connection... the connection i get here in the university doesnt allow me to do certain things on the internet... (i shouldnt be saying this but it doesnt allow me to use bittorent and programs where u can download things illegally)... i think its because of that... because the problem started when i came here to this dorm.... anyways...

Thanks GT for your help :)

btw this doesnt mean ur not awesome anymore... dont worry ur still Awesome! :)

Yep, that was the next thing on the list - IRC connects via different ports than regular http, and quite often those ports are blocked on firewalls and such. Tough luck.
