Best bit of advice to make signatures look a lot better is simply this..... 1px inner stroke layer border (add new layer, ctrl+a, edit>stroke, etc).
Try blending your render (the crop out of whatever it is) into the brushing by using a brushset with the setting to clear, also try experimenting with using parts of the render as the colour for the sig or just as additional pieces to accompany the brushwork aswell.
Umm.... I'll give some more advice when I think about it.

You could do a "double-border" too, by making a new layer, filling it in with white, setting the blending option (I forget at the moment, it's a drop-down in the layers box) to Darken, then go to Edit > Stroke > Make a 3px black border. Then after this, go back in that menu, make a 2px white border, and then go back one more time and make a 1px black border. Woo, double borders!
