Re: Old cars...
Hah, my brother told me that, then realised he'd sent them in under his name. By my brothers own words ''Id never own a 15 year old Datsun''

Re: Old cars...
So your brother send in pictures of your car.. saying that it's his car?

Huh? Compensate for what? I'm sure the tyres are wider than stock anywaysetsunakute wrote:Why is the car so low? The tires weren't even widened to compensate...
And the car isn't that low either . . .

Re: Old cars...
I'm guessing he lowered it to reduce roll in corners and increase corner speed. And that puts more stress on the tires, no? Sorry if I didn't make it directly clear at first, but the rear tires look like they're only 215mm wide.

Re: Old cars...
Lowering will not always reduce roll, and reducing roll does not equal higher corner speeds.
Reducing ride height and body roll helps more with control rather than outright grip - upgrading shock abosorbers and springs would achieve more improvements in that area.
Regardless, you can't "overstress" a tyre. It just reaches he limit of adhesion and lets go.
However, putting on tyres that are unnecessarily large will put extra stress on the vehicle components. You should only go with tyres that are a big as you need them to be.
I hope that is understandable, this is hard for me to explain

No, it's a retread of what I already know.
Maybe I posed the question incorrectly?

Right then, let's break down your previous post:
Great.setsunakute wrote:I'm guessing . . .
If you already know that this isn't necessarily true, then why did you say it?setsunakute wrote:. . . he lowered it to reduce roll in corners and increase corner speed.
Even if it does, so what?setsunakute wrote:And that puts more stress on the tires, no?
You can't possibly tell the exact width of those tyres by looking at the picture. And what do you mean by "only"? 215 is still wider than the stock tyre size.setsunakute wrote:Sorry if I didn't make it directly clear at first, but the rear tires look like they're only 215mm wide.

Re: Old cars...
Because my interpretation is that the car sees track time. Go figure, ya know?

Re: Old cars...
That car has indeed seen track time, but what's the difference? A lot of people with street-driven cars will have a separate set of wheels and tyres for the track anyway, so you would have no way of knowing if those were his track wheels or not.
Simply put, you're not making any sense.

Re: Old cars...
Hah, let me straighten up some things here...
The stock wheels on an RS13 are 15X5J with 195/50/15 tyres. The wheels on my SX were 18X7J, with 225/40/17 Pirelli P-Zero Rossos on the rears, and 215/35 on the fronts. Basically, they were a LOT qider than stock. Besides which, you dont need wider wheels/tyres to compensate for a lower vehicle.
Not exactly, he simply put his name at the bottom of the cover e-mail when he sent the pics in as a surprise. He did put that it was 'his brothers car', but then theyre unlikely to print ''Graham Taylors brothers car''.So your brother send in pictures of your car.. saying that it's his car?
The car was lowered 40mm on uprated springs and shockers, which by 200SX standards isnt very low at all considering the stock ride-height. To put it into context, there wasnt a speed bump I couldnt travel over as normally as any other road-going vehicle. Why is the car so low? The tires weren't even widened to compensate...

Lowering the car has nothing to do with reducing roll, lowering the car simply lowers the centre of gravity of the car, and can help increase the effectiveness of the cars weight distribution. However, it is the damping/rebound of the shockers and the spring rates which will help reduce body roll, as well as chassis bracing.I'm guessing he lowered it to reduce roll in corners and increase corner speed
