Advantages of manual transmission

Post by kovreu01 »

I've always been an automatic driver but after watching some videos of people making record times, I noticed that most of them used manual, so I made the switch. It feels pretty much the same, so can anyone tell me where the advantage is in manual transmission?

Also, the other thing that I can't get the hang of is drivers staying in one gear for the whole race once they reach their top speed, like 4th gear of 5th gear. Doesn't this limit your speed?

I wasn't as enthusiastic in NFSU1, but I did play competitively online, and automatic transmission was my choice. I'm not sure how much of a difference using manual transmission would make in UG1, but in games like Carbon and Most Wanted, the difference is pretty much significant. :)

You get more revs out of a manual transmission as of automatic. :)

More revs, as said, and also you can maintain "red line" revs which you sometimes need when powersliding. Can't do that with automatic as it will shift up and you'll lose the torque required to drift (thus causing unwanted understeer).

That\'s incredible. But no one\'s answered my question about why people sometimes stick in 4th or 5th gear on long relatively straights.

Your question seems rather vague. It eventually comes down to what car you use; if you're using an S2000 or a Skyline, there's no doubt you can pull off a constant 4th gear on straights. If you use cars like the Dodge Neon, it'd be slightly hard.

Hope you got me. ;)

The videos that I saw were of an Integra in 4th and an MX-5 in 5th.
