Help with layers

I am trying to draw over a vinyl with Photoshop but the original art underneath keeps being included with the new when I go in the game, how do I erase the original art underneath? I think I'm supposed to delete a layer in Photoshop or something but I'm not sure exactly how to do it, I have tried without success. In case you haven't noticed I am trying to make my own unique vinyl, not simply edit it. I don't know if this is the right way to go on about doing it. Please let me know if it's not.

create a new layer with empty background (so you can see the figure below) make there all your changes/drawings (if you need create other new layers the same way). then just delete the original layer (if it's locked and you can't unlock it just copy only your custom layer and past it in a new document, with black background). hope this can help
