Computer Help Thread
Re: Computer Help Thread
Well, I've isolated the problem, it was my HDD. It's been giving me heaps of problems anyways but the main one now is that it doesn't work properly. It causes windows to crash even before it loads so I've disconnected power to it, but I need to access it to get all my music off it. Anyone know how to do so?
Re: Computer Help Thread
I need help connecting a router. My computer does everything, but doesn't have an Ethernet port for some strange reason... so... what do I do if I want to connect a modem/router? Now, I have an ADSL modem, can I piggyback it onto my existing modem... and how? Otherwise, what USB ones are there? Please don't say upgrade the PC...

Re: Computer Help Thread
You'll need an Ethernet card that goes into a PCI slot on your motherboard, or an Ethernet adapter that plugs into a USB port. Both are fairly cheap.
Your computer must be pretty damn old

Re: Computer Help Thread
About 4 yrs. (Still runs Crysis comfortably)
Ok, picked an ethernet card...
Now... for some reason, ever since I played a certain CD in my computer, sometimes it Blue screens when I eject a disc. Like, 1 in 10 chance. (this is before the ethernet.)
Also, how can I get the PS3 to talk to my computer and my compuer to share music with the PS... I've made firewall exceptions and all and it won't work. I'm gonna try TVersity tomorrow, ATM, tried with WMP11.

Re: Computer Help Thread
Are they networked together properly? I'm guessing you're using landlines instead of Wi-Fi, have you run a direct connection between the two?
Just out of curiosity, how much more performance would you get out of a 10,000 RPM drive than a 7,500 RPM drive? I was thinking of buying a 74GB 10,000 RPM Raptor off newegg just as my Windows drive, but I think I'd rather save my money and put it twords my Xbox and TV funds.

Re: Computer Help Thread
Depends on what you're running of it. I also changed my system drive a while ago (the one that holds windows and most commonly used programs) to a similar 10k raptor, and particularly windows boot up time is now considerably shorter than with my previous "regular speed" drive (don't have exact timings, but I would estimate about 10-15 seconds faster start up).Carcrazy wrote:Just out of curiosity, how much more performance would you get out of a 10,000 RPM drive than a 7,500 RPM drive? But purely looking at read/write capability, the drive head covers a longer distance on the disk surface in the same amount of time thus reading/writing more data in the same time. I would imagine a direct comparison isn't far from the truth, that is about 30% increase in disk operation speeds.

Re: Computer Help Thread
No, it's wi-fi and it's decided to work all of a sudden. Signal strength is usually 90%Carcrazy wrote:Are they networked together properly? I'm guessing you're using landlines instead of Wi-Fi, have you run a direct connection between the two?

Re: Computer Help Thread
I'll be honest but I've never really dealt with vista so i need help. My sister brought a Sony VAIO laptop what came with vista and has inbuilt WiFi, i have no idea how to set up a connection to my router for it. Or even where to start..

Re: Computer Help Thread
According to my computer pro friend...
Good luckonce the router is on, the laptop should pick it up straight away... or try wireless manager or something in control panel... unless the default setting on the router is set wireless is off. Another possible reason is you didn't turn the wireless card on.

Re: Computer Help Thread
go to your router setting on the PC that is connected to it, and enable wireless + save your password
You should find it under my network places and you can find the routers ip in properties I think... type the ip into your browser and it should take you to it.

Re: Computer Help Thread
Fixed it!
The router has no security sadly, it finally found it when my sister moved it around the house. So probably wasn't in range or something.

Thanks baumaxx1 for help. Vista is really strange specially since i never used it at all.

Re: Computer Help Thread
It isn't strange, just new. And some laptops (like mine) have a Wireless on/off switch right on them, so maybe yours was off.

Re: Computer Help Thread
Solved
Damnit, I was almost hoping it'd be the CPU, then the replacement would be free...
Anyway, I lowered the clock on the GPU, meaning it's damaged from something. Who cares, it was still a toss up between a 360 and a 9800...
Although now I have to buy nto onyl a card, but a power supply and another case... >.<*
------------------------------
Okay, this is very, VERY weird. (It even caused 3 BSOD's, I've NEVER had a BSOD with Vista...)
Okay, so I had to buy a new hard drive, since my old one(s) (apparently) died. So after 3 weeks of downtime, finally got the money to buy one... with a $50 loan from my mom.
Anyway, got it in, installed Vista, went hitchless. I did notice after I got Pro Street installed a few small artifacts on the loading screens, but just figured it was because I hadn't updated the 7600's drivers... so I went ahead and downloaded the forceware off nVidia's website on my laptop, while I played Pro Street some more. <-- lol
Anyway, got it installed, played some more (lol again,) exited and went to bed.
(Offtopic: Hickuped a minute ago...) >_>
When I woke up, it had restarted from Windows Update. Logged in, started iTunes again, played some more Pro Street, (I'm kinda low on games since mine magicly keep breaking...) exited PS, went and had lunch, played some music before I got in the shower to get ready for work. When I got out it was aparently in sleep mode or something, but when it started back it was VERY laggy, and the CPU wanted to max out easily, and was actually idling between 50 and 70% usage. I wouldn't expect that from a single core, but for a quad it's almost unimaginable... I couldn't even play and music in iTunes because it wanted to max out so much... restarted, and it was fine again. Next time, it BSOD'd in under 15 minutes of usage. Restarted... ran 5 hours of stress tests on all 4 cores, and also ran a separate test on the RAM while I was at work. Came back, not a SINGLE error. Got on it, freakin' BSOD-ed in under 20 minutes just as 3Dmark06 was finishing installing... (I downloaded it while I was gone.)
Restart, re-installed 3Dmark, and ran it, to see if it could be that the 76 is about to bite it. Anyway, there were quite a few artifacts as it ran.
http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h267/ ... fxcard.jpg <-- Screen from the first test.
These only got worse at it went on. The firefly forest was insane, and when it got to the CPU test it was so bad you couldn't even see that (top-right) corner of the screen. Once it got to the Dragon test, BSOD. Even the loading screen for 3Dmark was messed up so bad you couldn't see anything.
I really think it's the CPU, although it could just as easily be my GPU. Which do you guys think it is?
Oh yeah, forgot to mention about the file system BS... Since Vista BSOD'ed twice, it ran a self-fixing test on the filesystem. Keep in mind that this hard drive was installed less than 24 hours ago of when this test was run. It had the most errors I have ever seen in any computer that I have worked on. Even a few weeks ago when that hard drive went, IT had less errors. Since I don't think the HD is faulty, i really think the CPU caused these errors. I could whip up another rig to test the GPU, but as for Ram, the HD, and the CPU, I'm in dead water...
Any ideas?
(And also, with the 3Dmark06 screen, my computer isn't really that slow, that's at 1/2 the resolution from Photobucket...)

Re: Computer Help Thread
I'm just concerned cause ive never dealt with a new gfx card before,my new 9600GT has been running between 30℃ to 45℃ is that normal for the gfx card? remember im just concerned seeing ive always had crappy gfx cards.

Re: Computer Help Thread
You don't need to worry until your temps exceed 90℃ or so. They can go higher but that won't be any good.

Re: Computer Help Thread
Although you temps are good, you may want to install a few case fans if you haven't already... don't go crazy and start installing like, 20 of them, 3 - 4, try different intake/outake configurations to get the best circulation. Although most likely, just put intakes on the front, an outtake on the side (if your case supports it,) and another outtake on the rear of the case.

Re: Computer Help Thread
IMO, sides should be used as an intake so the fan blows directly onto components.

Re: Computer Help Thread
You do have a point, but if you only have a cheap case like me (ATM anyway,) you can't do that. The reason I say that is if you only have 1 rear fan port, it's (in most cases,) better to keep the intake/outtake amount balanced.
BTW, stupid question, does anyone know a tutorial or something for disabling Vista's 'Big Brother' feature? I think It's been causing my BSOD's for random reasons...

Re: Computer Help Thread
Theoritically a negative pressurization gives you slightly better cooling, i.e. more exhaust fans. A positive pressurization gives you a cleaner case.

Control Panel > 'User accounts' > 'Turn user account control on or off' > reboot
AFIAK anyway. On linux atm so I can't check.
