Lol, you mean real American weight? Real American unreliability?
Im sorry, the Americans do lots of things right. Building cars isn't one of them.

Uhh, that Camaro should weigh less than 3600lbs. Not exactly a lightweight, but not too bad for something with a big-block up front (and, if I'm not mistaken, very close in weight to something similarily sized such as a 3-series or an A4).

As for reliability, well, the Americans do have their occational problems, but sometimes they can do great powertrains (Chrysler in particular, had the almost indestructable slant six and 318 engines, along with the 727 transmission). The American V8 tends to run forever. The rest of the car may fall apart around it, but that engine will keep on truckin. Although, if you trust organizations like JD Power, the Americans have made incredeble strides, and hover in and around the Japanese and Europeans.

Anyways, you gotta admit, the Americans do make large, brawny V8's. Back then, they'd usually just dump it in a random chassis and hope for the best.

Arrogance, plain and simple. Remember, there are always bigger and badder fish out there. That, and those Porsches would rape that thing in the corners. And when I say rape, I mean in a dark alley with no lubrication, and a brass band playing the Valkyrie.

As for the good old small blocks, they are good engines. More recently, one has been put into the new Marcos, and pushes out some respectable power. That said, it did break down on the day of testing it at Top Gear. My knowledge of the big-blocks is limited, so youll have to excuse me on that one.
*sig removed for being too big. limitations are 550x120px & 50kb*

American idea of muscle is 280 bhp out of a big block chevvy, in car weighing several tonnes.
Anyone else noticed that the only companies who ever seem to get respectable power out of US V8's tend to be europian (I.E Marcos)
That said, its still putting out less than 100bhp/litre. An equivilent M3 (take the 2004 CSL) puts out 360 from 3.2l displacement- over 110bhp per litre without forced induction. Always impressive.
Even my M3 puts out 101bhp per litre.
-EDIT-
Though that is Crankshaft rather than wheel HP

Ok first of all, as Hecubus mentioned, it does weigh around 3600lbs, which is NOT that heavy. And second of all that car is almost 37 years old and it still runs like a charm; I'd say thats pretty reliable, wouldn't you?

good point, these cars were not ment for the race track, thats why they ARN'T on the race track! they are always on the dragstrip and will always be on the drag strip...before you go criticizing, think about what you're saying.

280bhp?!?! please tell me your kidding....that original 396 is rated at 350....although it is wayyy more than that because when manufactured, chevy said that they were only at 350 for insurance reasons....although stock it is easily pushing over 400hp....with all of the work we have done to it...it is 500+hp....280....good joke...

Ahh, the infamous hp/l argument. Granted, big V8s tend not to be the most efficient engines around, but they make up for it with power curves flatter than Saskatchewan.

As far as weight goes, your typical pony car would be in the 3500lbs range (although the big blocks would generally be around 4000lbs), while the muscle cars would be between 4000-4500lbs (the Plymouth Road Runner was actually about 3900). And remember, these are big cars, the weight is to be expected (as I said, pony cars are about the same size as a 3-series or an A4, which seem to weigh about the same, and the muscle cars would be on par with a full size luxury sedan, and those are also in the 4000-4500lbs range).

Now, what I'd like to see, is a '69 Camaro Z28 (as it was sort of designed for some semblance of handling) versus a '69 Porsche 911 (around a track of course). Depending on the track, I have no doubt the Porsche would win, but I'd also wager the Camaro would be more competetive than many of you would either realize, or like to admit.

That BMW image is still cropped/resized, and why on earth would you crop an image for a slideshow? I want to see the originals, which you obviously don't have.

Just give it up already . . .
