Desktop 8600 GT:
32 Unified Shader Processors clocked at 1180 MHz
8 ROPs clocked at 540 MHz
256 MB of 128-bit memory clocked at 1400 MHz

Notebook 8600M GT:
32 Unified Shader Processors clocked at 950 MHz
8 ROPs clocked at 475 MHz
256 MB of 128-bit memory clocked at 1400 MHz

To summarize, the desktop version is about 20% faster than the laptop version.

My friend the dumba$$ wants to try install a PC 8800 into his laptop. I can't persuade him not to, because it won't even fit. The 8800 is like twice as thick as his laptop. I keep telling him he needs a mobile, but he doesn't even care. His loss, lol.

Question... does anyone know what the 9 series card will run for? I can't afford the best one they'll make, (my guess for that would be about $600,) I'm looking for something in the 300-400 price range, that can out-preform an 8800GT. I may could go up to $500, (If I worked my *** off,) but it's highly unlikely...

Now, for my next question... Is it worth waiting over 2 months for a 9 series card, (keep in mind, I AM running vista,) or should I go ahead and buy the XFX 8800GT XXX Alpha Dog Edition card as I planned on before...?

it depends on which card you think is better and how much it is and how much you would have to work in order to get it and how long you would wait for it

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking... I'm gonna (hopefully) be making 100-200 a week this summer, which means I can buy alot better stuff... Plus I can use that christmas money for better things... like working on the Escape.

Both are pretty equal, in my experience.

The 8800 GT has better driver support and performs better in older games, so I would probably give it the nod if the price is close. However, driver support will improve on the HD 3800 and both games play older games extremely well anyways, so several months from now, it most likely won't make too big of a difference.

The 8800 GT has a very annoying cooler on it whereas the HD 3870's cooler, while not perfect, is much more tolerable to listen to. However, the 8800 GT uses a single-slot, so it may be a better choice if you plan to use many other expansion cards w/ it.

CrossfireX seems to scale a little better than SLI from what I've read (can't say I've used either in a multi-GPU config) and it's better supported (Intel and AMD/ATI chipsets both support Crossfire whereas only Nvidia chipsets support SLI), so if you plan on getting multiple cards, you may be better off w/ the ATI cards.

Does anyone have the Arctic Cooling Accelero S1 Rev. 2? I want to install one onto my 7900GS to make it a LOT quieter. The CPU fan isn't the loud one. The GFX fan roars...
I was looking at that cooler and it seems like a good one.

I'd normally go for a Zalman item, because I find them repetuable and quality, so you might like to check that out? Alsom a good place for help is on the UK PC Gamer Forum, they are absolute nerds, i'll link at the bottom. Also, check for clearance because chances are if the cooler is chunky, it renders the PCI expansion slot underneath useless. For example, I have a tight fit even on a big gamer case because of two 8800 Ultras, and all the other crap like my Creative X-Fi sound card (its huge) and other bits like water cooling for the GFX's and CPU. You have to be very careful space wise. If the space is tight, you might need a case fan as well to draw the heat out (go for a 120mm case fan from a good brand like Artic cooling or Zalman.)

Sorry for the double post but yeah, I run 8800 Ultra's in SLi and SLi doesn't scale as well as CrossFire. SLi isn't worth it unless u have 8600GT's and then it's quite good. Saying that, I shred Crysis and everything else, so I can't give a full comparison, also because I've personally never used CrossFire, but my mate does so I'll have a play on his rig.
