[Small greeting] Hey Stiggy and other oldies! Been a while! Thought I'd drop by, since PS caught my attention, and see if this place has 'grown up' =) [/Small greeting]
Personally I lean a lot towards simulation. Arcade has always been fun, but implementing any kind of a storyline in a racing game has always had a label saying LAME stuck to it, where I'm from. That being said, I get excited about racing. Skilled racing. Shaving seconds off my performance is reward in itself, and quite enough to keep me glued for hours on end. With this in mind, Pro Street undoubtedly captured my attention. It's going where NFS hasn't gone in a very long time, closing the circuits and adding a teensy bit of realism to the game. No more city nonsense! It worked in UG2, it worked wonders in MW, but MY GOD, it was horrendous in Carbon! Who the hell enjoys shifting up and down between second and third in a Murcielago on practically every darn track?! Free roam got old really fast in most wanted as well, but at least the city had a more pleasant layout while racing. Fact of the matter is that I mostly just skipped to the various races. The police being taken out of the game does, imo, only improve on things. Where they actually did serve a purpose in MW, in Carbon they were pure annoyance. Something to avoid and get rid of asap, so one could go on to the next race. I typically ended up Alt+F4 as soon as I finished a race, but had picked up a tail.. then fired up the game again and kept going.
I haven't progressed much in PS as of yet - just got the 350z - but so far my only complaint is that the game is too easy. Competitive AI, they say... and yet I win by a stretch every single competition I enter. Sure, I come from sims like LFS, GTR2, RACE and RACE07.. I know how to work the track and time my shifts and all that.. but still! Before anyone gets smart-assy, yes.. running on King, with no assists. Still missing a challenge. I'm hoping the faster cars will become more interesting. That's not to say I'm not having fun! I am! Having a blast over here.
Car handling is undoubtedly more simmy than previous installments, but still a stretch from realistic. Again, hopefully later cars will be more interesting and do more sideslipping, be more soapboxy..
Agreed with all the guys that say the tire-warm up is tiresome and lame.. I guess it makes sense to do it, but I think it's a bothersome implementation they've chosen for it.
As for the graphical aspect.. I like customizing cars, I really do. I think PS has some amazing graphics, and I definitely don't miss Carbon's crappy city graphics! I loved the graphics in MW, and I love the ones in PS. I think the bodykits are great, especially because you can autosculpt them and thereby add a touch of personality, if it's aesthetics you go for. When it comes to performance by autosculpt, I'm a bit sceptical it actually means anything in this game. More likely they added an illusion made with fuzzy little numbers and called it a feature than that it actually changes anything, gameplay-wise. Furthermore, I like the vinyls there are, and I like the placement system. Nothing is more bothersome than Carbon's vinyl system. Sure, 20 layers.. kudos.. but when you have to move every single one of them across the car and then rotate it to get what you now can do simply by turning the 'mirror' function on.. theehee..
There's something there that confuses me, btw.. I've seen plenty of examples of body vinyls on the AI cars, yet none are to be found in my selection of vinyls, nor decals.. has anybody any idea why and how they can be achieved/found?
The carlist is fine, imo.. though I don't really get why a Murcielago is in, but various Ferraris get to sit out.. same with the Carrera GT aso.. right now there's just the Murcielago, various Porshe, Viper and Ford GT, that I can see, that are definable by the term 'supercars'..
Anyway, all in all, NFS seems to be going in a direction most pleasing to guys like me, who really don't mind repetition - it's a racing game, for pete's sake! - and still like little customization on the sidelines
