Ah, right, good point. I guess I interpreted the question as "first car to actually consider keeping for a long period of time."

For learning how to drive I'd have to take something cheaper like maybe a Civic or something.

In all fairness guys, the USDM 240SX, despite its 2400cc displacement, only puts out 140bhp. Thats in a car that weighs 1210kg. The weight distribution is fantastic, making it very predictable under hard driving, and although the UKDM and JDM variants are very tail happy, the USDM car doesnt really have the power to surprise you with it.

In all honesty, I probably still wouldnt opt for one as my first car. And that has nothing to do with the fact that my Stage 2 ''axe murderer'' SX tried killing me on more than one occasion. For a first car, you want something that will teach you to drive as already stated, and you want something thats easy to maneouver. This will probably sound daft to non-Europeans, but the S13 is quite a big car. In fact, the last time I got into the Ripspeed demo car at Santa Pod after having my MX5 for several months, I recall at how much like a limousine it seemed. Much poorer visibility at the rear, and an exceptionally long bonnet compared to my car.

In all honesty, if I were making the choice again, I probably would actually buy an MX5 (or Miata to you). Ive learned more from this car than anything else Ive ever driven, and I include Elises in that statement. I have been thinking recently of buying a 180SX Type-X as a daily driver when my car comes off the road for its SR swap, I think theyre fantastic to look at, and they make a great cruiser. My biggest regret looking back at the SXs Ive owned is that comparatively speaking, I had no idea how to drive the poor buggers properly. Even re-watching a video on my phone from the 'Ring in '06, excuses aside, I spent an awful lot of time off boost.

My post probably hasnt helped you much, so Ill try something else. This is a car Ive been looking to buy over the last couple of weeks. I was too late and it now lives in Ireland, but Im sure you wont fail to appreciate the beauty of this thing.




Edit - Just to clarify engine specs for the S13s...

RS13 - UKDM - CA18DET (1809cc inline 4 turbo) - 167bhp - Garrett T25 turbo
RPS13 - JDM - SR20DET (1997cc inline 4 turbo) - 197bhp - Redtops came with a roller-bearing T28, the later black tops came with the T28 also found on the S14s. The Type-Xs came with a roller-bearing T28.
RHS13 - USDM - KA24DE (2397cc inline 4) - 140bhp - Engine comes from the Nissan Terrano. Decent amount of torque, strong bottom-end.

What I meant was that it is not a bad starter car. It is sturdy and can stand the abuse of the beginner driver and will generally let you have fun without offing yourself. Plus, 4WD can come in handy.

Buy a decently old one and you can thrash it around, rag it out, and generally treat it like a teenager will, and then, when you are smarter and more confident on the road, go for something sportier. In the meantime, you can save up for your dream car.

PS: Parts are dirt cheap, too.

And you're what? 15? I find that really questionable considering US law doesn't let you own or drive a car under 17 (even when 17 you need a learners permit). So you're first car was when you were 12? Don't make me laugh.

Anywho, I'm not sure what the laws are, here, now, but a year or two, ago, you could have a learner's permit at 15.

ok as for finding one you would be better off buying a S13 240SX either a coupe or fastback(convertible S13's are pieces of Junk) swap in a SR,CA, or boosted Twin can KA. insurance it really depends on your records (tickets,school grades,DMV test,etc.). track wise if your going to go drifting http://www.wheretodrift.com is a good place to check other wise just go on google. mod wise it depends on the engine. CA= hard to find parts $$$$, KA= moderatly hard to find parts some what pricey, SR= easy to find parts no that expensive. I talked to Nob taniguchi and he said that the HKS S15 cost 200K to build so it all depends on what level of mods your looking at. check out http://www.performancecenter.com , http://www.optionsauto.com and magazines. hope that helps ya

You can own a car at any age, and in my area you can get your license at 16.

I have a Front WD Ford Escort that I've had for about 9 years, and large amounts of property to drive it on. I know quite a bit more than you all think I do.

Ofcourse, you took your Escort for a spin and drove it on public roads, thus making you completely familiar with them, the cars around you and anything else.

The age at which you may have a driver's license varies by state in the US.

My cousin lived in Alaska for a while and got his learners at 14 1/2 and his license at 16. I know in Virginia, you must be 15 1/2 for the learners and 16 and 3 mos. for a license. But, like I said, it varies.
