Teh Laptops topic

Post by Stereo »

OK I think there should be a topic for all talk about laptops. ;)

I want this Acer TravelMate TM2423WXCi-XPH NoteBook Intel Celeron M 1.5GHz 14.1" Wide XGA 256MB DDR2 400 40GB DVD/CD-RW Combo Intel GMA900

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6834115229

It seems pretty good, considering the battery life is 2-3 hours. My mom's laptop is 2-3 minutes... O.o (Cause it got dropped 20 times in its life.) But this is just something I "want." Don't think I'll get it very soon.

Looks like a nice entry-level model. I'd get a memory upgrade to 512MB right away though. 256MB isn't enough for anything these days, not even word processing...

Honestly...even 512 mb is not enough these days. My laptop has 512 mb memory (480 mb + 32 mb video - shared) and it's definately not enough.

Anyways, this is my laptop:
http://www.toshiba.ca/web/product.grp?l ... 52#spectop

Toshiba Satellite A20
- * Intel® Pentium® 4 2.66 GHz, Integrated Coprocessor, 533MHz PSB
L1 Cache 12KB/8KB (instruction/data), L2 Cache 512KB
- Standard: 512MB PC2100DDR (256MB+256MB)
- 40.0 billion bytes, 9.7mm height, Enhanced IDE, 4200rpm.
- * Trident CyberBlade 32MB shared. AGP bus 128 MHzx4 (AGP4x), 2D and 3D graphics accelerator, Simultaneous Display Capable.

Yes it is crap by today's standards but I got it almost 3 years ago before entering in high school (Grade 9) and I use it for Internet and taking notes at school. I'd really want a new laptop with a real video card...

Not only that but I've had a lot of problems with the laptop (I'm NEVER getting another Toshiba product ever again). The screen hinges broke, the hard-drive and charger also broke. The charger was replaced for free because it was under warranty, same with the hard-drive but my dad had to pay almost $300 CDN to replace the hinges...

Wow, originally I was going to save up for that, but I'm now saving up for the Acer Ferrari 3000LMi Notebook (1.87 GHz Athlon XP-M 2500+, 512 MB RAM, 60 GB Hard Drive, DVD+/-RW/CD-RW Drive, ATI Mobility Radeon 9200), as it is better suited for gaming. If i can't save up for that, I'll probably have enough for an Acer TravelMate TM2423WXCI 14.1" Notebook PC (Intel Celeron M Processor 370, 512 MB RAM, 80 GB Hard Drive, CD-RW/DVD-ROM Combo Drive), the same one as yours but with an 80GB hard drive. Right now I'm barely running NFS:PU on my IBM Thinkpad X21 with a 20GB hard drive and Pentium III processor.
C2D T7500 2.2 ghz| 256 MB NVIDIA Quadro FX570m|160 GB 7200 RPM|2 GB RAM- my laptop

Gaming... laptop? I didn't know those two words could be used together like that. Seriously though, what's the point of having a gaming laptop?

I agree, i mean what if you wanted to play a Racing Simulator on the move, you'd have to carry an extra 2 bags for the Wheel and Pedals

I guess a gaming Laptop is ok for a game such as The Sims or The Movies.

It's small (12.1"), so very portable. Not for gaming though (ATI X200 as gpu).

@ Rigga: that seems like a good laptop. If you want more HDD space, you can always get an External HDD =D

That doesn't make sense, the amount of processes is all done by yourself. If you install lots of crap, your Acer will obviously take longer to start up.

My laptop shows 56 processes after boot with antivirus/firewall/adware programs running on top of the "regular" laptop stuff (device drivers, power managers, etc.)

75 is definitely a bit on the high side.
