Buying a new CPU Cooler

Post by Skyline_man »

As you all know, summer is about to start, and its hot already. 8)

My CPU is already feeling it, it idles at around 45c (which makes the rpm speed reaches 3000) , under load it reaches 60c+ (3950+ RPM) so i was thinking of getting a new cooler for my CPU and needed some advice buying one.

My CPU is Intel Pentium D 930 3.0 GHZ, LGA 775 Socket.
My Mobo is Gigabyte GA-8I945P-G.

40 $ is the max i can pay for it.

Thanks.

Well i don't know about the prices much (cuz they can vary) so i suggest you search for a Zalman or Thermaltake.

Not sure what the prices are for you, but here are a few sub-top coolers I'd recommend:

Scythe Ninja
Thermalright SI-128
Thermaltake Big Typhoon
Coolermaster GeminII

Really, most coolers for sale are usually a lot better than the stock cooler anyway. What I'm listing here above isn't really required for standard PC users, more for enthusiasts on a budget. Keep in mind that most of these coolers are fairly large.

Since its 120mm fan, how can i measure the space inside my case ?

That Zalman is not very good on a Pentium D it gets 60+ under full load so it's no improvement over your current one.
I'd pay 7$ more and buy:

I am reading the customer reviews right now, positive comments with all people that have it on their Pentium D.
Pros: This plus Arctic Silver 5 keeps my Pentium D 930 (3 Ghz) just above room temperature. I have never seen my temps go above ~34C
Pros: Running with a Pentium D 930 and a ASUS P5N32-SlI deluxe and one EVGA 7800GT 256-P2-N516 and 2GB of OCZ DDR2 667 memory in a ANTEC Sonata II. It keeps the CPU at 20 degrees C. Neither the CPU or the Graphics is overclocked.
Pros: Effective-- it really makes a noticeable difference w/ my Pentium D.
Pros: amazingly quiet and keeps my pentium d 920 at 20 C
Comments: keeps my pentium d 820 at 32/34 idle 45/46 load with artic silver. get artic silver thermal grease included sucks. awesome heatsink get if you want some serious cooling

You're recommending the AlCU version, yet you say the full copper 7700 sucks? The AlCu will perform worse than the full copper version.

You might as well dish out a little more and get what I listed above. Nothing wrong with the 7700, it was the top performer of the previous generation aircoolers.

Well, the problem is that since i am getting the cooler from the US, its gonna cost me about 20 $ more than the original price, thats why i found the Zalman 7700 pretty good according to the price and the customer reviews.
