Sick of Windows Movie Maker?

Post by Maverick2K4 »

Yeah, so am I. Windows Movie Maker still has its bugs in it, and frankly, I'm a bit tired of shaky frames around the transitions when compressing at around 1mbps or higher. Today, I was watching a rerun Call For Help on TechTV, and they showed off an application, a free application, that does video editing. It's called Avid FreeDV, but you can also import your video files, and audio. I don't know if it does transitions yet, but I'll be downloading it to find out soon. It only does MOV I think, but I'll have to find out for sure.

I found one program which has some similar effects, but it's a DVD making (WinDVD Delux) soft.. But it's very wierd and the quality in saving is pretty strage to say the least. I'll keep looking.

There's a couple of programs I tested as well. I was most pleased with Ulead Mediastudio Pro 7. Although the trial version will give you a big red x over everything you do, if you manage to get the full version cheap somewhere, you'll be very satisfied with it. It has tonnes of transition effects, filters, text effects...
Ulead Videostudio is a light alternative especially as you can get it free (I got it with my gfx card and with my dvd burner), but it isn't nearly as powerful as mediastudio. It gets the job done though.

I am using Pinnacle Studio Version 8 , which is really great , you can capture video , edit it , add transitions , and then make a movie file in just about any format . Now they have Pinnacle Version 9 you can pick up at best buy for about $100.

I'd like to thank everyone that participates on the forums here :)

As a site owner it's really cool to see discussion going on and what not, we don't get tons of traffic, and not that many people talk here, but the little be we have I really appreciate, thank you.

Erm... yeh we've all been using WMM2 for our movies. Trouble is, darn thing crashes more often than a blind rollerblader... :( That's why ppl like UrQuattro and Maverick are looking for alternatives.

Yeh agreed - is there no way to reduce the render sample rate or the final resolution of the movie? Those two will drastically reduce file size with some quality loss.

Yes I know this is old (please dont kill me) but if you are having filesize troubles, compress it with DivX. :)

Good advice slaer, but if rendering with DivX, be sure to warn your viewers that they will need the DivX codec installed in order to watch the finished vid.
