Mazda Motors cooking up gas engine with better than hybrid m

Post by LInconG »

Mazda Motors is working on a fiendish new project. The goal is a traditional gas motor that will get 70 miles per gallon. The Ford Motors Motor Company had a similar announcement with plans for a 45 mpg engine in the Focus. Mazda is designing an ultra-efficient internal combustion engine and not a hybrid at all. The craft is sophisticated, but the principles behind it are quite basic. Article Resource - Mazda making a gas engine more efficient than a hybrid by Car Deal Expert.

Mazda engine outdoes hybrids

Mazda has been testing a new engine. CNN reports that this has created quite the buzz. The point of the engine is to get about 70 miles per gallon. It is fairly close to that goal too. Fuel consumption that low will certainly be attractive, so long as the car is reasonably priced. There could be two technologies used by the motor. Variable valve timing and direct fuel injection are these. Fuel is injected right to the piston chamber rather than via a fuel injector on top of the block in direct injection which allows ignition to be more precise. The computer has automatic valve timing on it which makes it very efficient when it comes to timing, when using variable valve timing. Otherwise, the timing would be mechanically set which would mean the valve operation would be unvarying. It is a really basic idea although it’s new technology.

Simple ideas involved

There is a really basic science the Mazda motor and 45 mpg Focus is using. Mechanical advantage and mechanical efficiency are two significant principles involved. The energy ratio needed to perform is what mechanical efficiency is. The amount of force produced from a unit of energy from a machine is what mechanical advantage is. If an engine can extract more power from a unit of fuel, it could be have fuel efficiency. That is why you will need to have mechanical advantage.

Having it happen in reality

If an engine can put gas in the right place at the right time, there will be more efficiency. This means more force will be created than traditional fuel injection creates. Efficiency also does better when there are things like turbocharged smaller engines. The technology involved with hybrid cars is amazing. It is a fairly new technology still though. The traditional combustion engine will be used for a long time still. It could be fun to determine how technology can advance with it.

Meh. Lots of cars already produce far better MPG figures than hybrids. They're called diesels.
Interesting fact. In a coal/oil based energy economy like that of the UK or USA, a plug-in electric car is more polluting (in terms of CO2 emissions) than a small turbocharged petrol or diesel engine.
