How to blow up an EG Honda Civic

Post by boganbusman »

First, we need a Civic. Preferably a crap one that is no longer registered and ready for the scrapheap. And also free.
(I have two, in case you were wondering. Spare parts woooo!)

It also helps if you are unemployed and have lots of free time.

. . .

Then we start doing this!

And this!

And that's all I have for now. Will keep updated.

20psi and beyond. The turbo that's on there at the moment (T25 from a BNR34) won't make that kind of boost but it will be fine for the first stage of the build.

The motor is totally stock but we're going to de-comp it, down to about 8:1.
ECU will be a full stand-alone Megasquirt 1 PCBv3.0. Electronic boost controller, flatshift control, launch control, meth injection.

It's gunna be fuly hektic bro 8)

Pulled the sunroof out, and we are going to replace all of the windows with plastic. Glass weighs a lot.

Image

550cc injectors from an RX7. They didn't really fit, so we made them fit with brute force.

Image

Image

Getting serious with the strippage. Trying to take out as much wiring as possible, just leaving the ignition and ECU wires.

Image

Started cutting out the insides. There will be lots more of this happening.

Image

We'll be doing something interesting with the rear, more to come later.
Also, you can see how much the car has lifted due the the removed weight!

Image
Welded some steel rods across the front to support all the intercooler and bumper etc.. It's strong enough to sit on.

I am merely anticipating that it will blow up when we try to race it. Wait and see...

Jeeze, how much is all that plastic going to cost you?

Better question is who actually makes plastic car windows? o.O

Dunno, but it shouldn't cost that much. We can just buy large sheets and cut it ourselves . . . how hard can it be?

So anyway, we did something a little bit exciting today.

If you can remember, I mentioned in the last post that we would do something interesting with the rear . .

Well . . .

I hope you are ready for this . . .

In order to remove more weight, and improve aerodynamics . . .

(I am getting really serious about the aero lol)

HERE WE GO

Image

Image

Image

Awww yeah!

We are going to fill the space with a single flat piece of sheet metal, no more hatch or window in the back. And I will make a diffuser or something for the bottom section.

I seriously thought about making it into a ute, but that will probably create problems with chassis strength. I don't want to start welding in fat support structures, it will end up with more weight instead of less.

Cutting cars apart is ridiculously fun

I just looked it up, this kind of aero is called a "Kammback."

Just like a Honda Insight.

Sort of.

Yeah, it's different . . . I've never seen anyone do this to a Civic, so perhaps this is a world first? Who knows.

Image
The new rear panel being put in place.

Image
It's held on with spot welds. Strength is good.

Image
New turbo, this time from an SR20. Still a T25 but bigger than the other one.
We also finished working out the plumbing, just waiting on some T-bolt clamps to hold it all together.

Image
Started building the ECU at home.

Image
Very similar to the ECU in my blue MR2, but lower-spec (and cheaper).

Videos, yes there will be videos! But we are not done yet . . .

Image

I made a little switch panel that goes next to the handbrake. From left to right: Starter motor, ignition, ECU, radiator fan.
The ECU is wired separately so I can access it with the laptop and not need to have the ignition on at the same time.

Image

I decided to rip out all of the original wiring and make a new loom from scratch. It's pretty messy but everything is easy to work on, in case I ever need to repair or change some things. I made an earth strip so that all the sensors can ground at the same point. This is important for accurate sensor operation. The two ignition relays are right next to the strip. One is just for the ignition coil, the other relay does eveything else on the ignition circuit.

Image

The silver/black rectangle next to the throttle body is the electronic boost controller. There is a relay sitting on the intake pipe which controls power for the VTEC solenoid. The other relay on the left is for the starter motor.

Image

I bought some ARP head studs, so we will need to remove the camshafts and get those installed at some point.

Image

Finally got those T-bolt clamps to finish off the intercooler piping. Also note the lack of air filter. We're going to run it open because every horsepower counts right? :)

Image

The engine bay is mostly done, time to start on the interior wiring.

Image

We started replacing the glass too.

Image

Finished building the ECU, all that's left is to load the firmware and give it a final test.

Ok Pabl0z, you wanted destruction, here it is!

A few weeks ago, my boss decided to jump in the car and go for a drive down the street. The car was not tuned at all and actually running very lean, and this is what happened:

Image

Yep, what you're looking at there is a nice fat hole in the block. It actually looks worse around the other side...

Image

The snapped rod took out eveything in it's path.

Image

This guy.

Image

Maybe the rod just didn't want to be friends with the piston anymore.

Image

Piston is sad :(

But it's ok, we had that spare car remember? So here is the new engine:

Image

Let's hope this one doesn't blow up as well
