I had the same problem time ago.... I run it on XP and Gforce FX5200.
You are lucky compared with me and my problem

I posted it in
THIS thread.
I reinstalled it weeks ago and now it runs well:
What can I tell you? I updated drivers, reinstalled XP some time ago... and nothing more. I haven't downloaded any patch for the game. The graphics card is the same.

i opened 3DSetup.exe in the folder and said NVidia TNT2
i think it is this?
nVidia TNT/TNT2
On the TNT and TNT2 class cards if you are having trouble with unreadable or scrambled fonts, try changing the Addressing Mode switches in the TNT/TNT2 video card control panel to (you may need to play with these settings):
- Non-Filtered Texel Origin: Upper left corner;
- Filtered Texel Origin: x=0.00 texels, y=0.00 texels.

NFS5 - Porsche Unleashed and nvidia cards don't seem to get along regarding the text. With the older cards and any ATI video card, you can turn up the ansiotropic (filter) to solve this, but with the newer nvidia cards, it's an issue.
You can try DX8Z.DLL from the spot patch, this may help with the text, but may mess up the actual game play. I have a copy of the spot patch, intended for NFS4 - High Stakes, but the drivers are interchangeable. Note that you only need to extract DX8Z.DLL from the zip file, the rest of the stuff is for NFS4. Backup your DX7Z.DLL, extrack DX8Z.DLL, and rename it to DX7Z.DLL.
