@ korge, no it does not have to be in that format. when you buy them from the itunes stroe they are .m4a and have all my music at 128 kbps and 44100 khz there is choice that when i select all of my music in my library to convert the selection to aac. i am just wondering if there is any benefit to aac over mp3
AAC (m4a is just a container for AAC, along with mp4, aac and 3gp for mobile) is a newer audio codec.
It was not developed by apple for itunes nor is it exclusive to it. If you want to know more about it, read the wiki article.
It is proven to be better than mp3 especially at lower bitrates. If you can, avoid mp3 as wma, ogg and aac will provider better quality with the same file size.
In my personal opinion 128kbps AAC are quite listenable (as mp3s with the same bitrate are crap), however it is a minimum, if you can use higher bitrates.

I haven't read all this thread so not sure if someone has mentioned it before. I have the Sony bean. It has a 1gb flash memory, but the best bit is the USB charger. Flip the little cover off and the usb connector pops out, stick it in your PC for 3 minutes and you have 3 hours battery life and so on, right upto a maximum of 50 mins=50 hours.
Even though i have this myself, and i'm 30, i'd recommend it for youngsters who like music, because you never have to worry about running out of batteries. I have two young kids who have a small 256mb mp3 player each. You can fit quite a few songs on for them, but the batteries never last long enough. The mp3 player spends more time in the cupboard because we're forever running out of batteries. The Sony bean doesn't have that problem.

boganbusman wrote:Why don't you buy some rechargeable batteries for your kids?
And then recharge them for X amount of hours?
Or simply buy a Sony Bean next time, which when plugged into USB charges in minutes.
Yep, i just made that bit up! Sony.co.uk Like i said before, the best bit about it is the flip out USB that recharges in minutes, UP TO 50 HOURS BATTERY LIFE.boganbusman wrote:Also, I find it hard to believe that your Sony thing has 50 hours of battery life. Maybe without any headphones plugged in . . .
Sony.co.uk wrote:What’s more, it’s simple and superfast to charge up. Faster than all the other players on the market, you only have to charge it for 3 minutes to get 3 hours’ playback from it, though if you charge it to capacity you’ll then be able to use it for 50 hours non-stop. Wow!

Also, it says that he didn't have the patience to see if it actually had 50 hours in it. He was just assuming.
So why would Sony lie about it? Is this one of the worlds great conspiracies? I'm sure there are many other people who have tested their very words just to catch them out. I imagine it would be one of the first things you would do judging by your doubts.
Look mate, i was just offering an alternative to those poor excuses for an mp3 player many people buy their kids. Ones like this which eat up battery life. The Sony Bean is great that you can charge it up in minutes. No more looking round the house for batteries or charging them for hours before you can use it.

That's true companies do often exaggerate the battery life of their products. When you have the volume up with will the features and so forth it can start draining the battery life quicker then the state time. However - 50 hours is still a long effin' time. How much could they exaggerate exactly, without actually lying? Hell even if the mp3 player lasted 40 hours or 45 hours i'd be freakin impressed - that's still a lot!boganbusman wrote:Just because he states that it has 50 hours of playback, it doesn't mean that it does. Man last night was sweet.
I formerly got a iPod Shuffle (512mb), which broke down. I send the iPod to repair and about 3 weeks later I got information, that Apple couldn't repair or either replace my iPod! But after that I heard that the seller offered me to exchange the iPod for a different MP3 player without any fees. So I decided to go with the Creative Zen V (1gb).
Man this player is better that the iPod ever.

I thought 50 hours of playback meant 50 hours of music.Sir Ibi wrote:That's true companies do often exaggerate the battery life of their products. Well my little 256mb player is supposed to play for 20+ hours, but instead it plays for 6-8 hours.
Could be even less.
Because I usually only listen to it on the way to school and back and between classes.
So I listen to it for about 2h/day or less, and the battery dies after 3 days or so.
And a couple of days ago i went shopping downtown and i had just put in newly recharged batteries and they died on the way home, and the whole trip only took me about 4h.

Battery
The batter life on the Bean is impressive. On a full charge it is rated at 50 hours of playback time. I did not have the patience to evaluate the battery life of the bean, but you can safely count on between 40-50 hours. You can also quick-charge the player for 3 minutes, giving you a 3 hour playback time. This is a great grab and go feature.
