Yeah, the title's flashy.
Anyways, I got my license today, so I took the corolla for a ride. Sadly, I haven't been registered into my parents' insurance so I was limited to a small distance to travel from home, lol. The flooding also blocked a few roads I wanted to snap photos on, but whatever. I had a ton of fun just riding around.

Here are three pics.
I wanna polish it this summer (the old polish is starting to come off lol), get new speakers (Front ones are stock, rear ones are $5 pieces of crap, free with the receiver) Yeah, I like my music to sound good and the lows aren't very audible, the highs are a little muffled, and the mids are almost absent. D:
Was lookin at these for rear: Eclipse 6-1/2" 3-way speakers
and these for front door: Kicker 4" 2-way speakers

Niec! That's a similar model to my old 'rolla.
btw that doesn't look like the polish is coming off . . . I think it's the clearcoat. It will need to be repainted if you want to want to restore it.

Depends. See if you can find some guy who will paint it in his shed for $200.
Personally though, I would just leave it. There's not much point in dropping cash on old cheap cars (besides maintenance).

Meh, what about $100 for speakers? Front and back.
Could always take them out if I get a different car.
Honestly, the current stock ones sound like crap. :p

Yeah speakers and stuff is fine because you can always remove them and transfer to the next car.
IMO it's hard to get car audio to sound "good", but you can try!

The audio in our Camry sounds amazing compared to the corolla. I'd be delighted to have the same or even better audio.

Old cars full of audio equipment just sound like children's rattles.Stereo wrote:The audio in our Camry sounds amazing compared to the corolla. I'd be delighted to have the same or even better audio.

Re: ~Stereo's '97 Corolla *-W00T-*~
Why's that?
And also, I need help with the whole audio setup. Would my receiver with this many watts:
# RMS power x channels (watts)-13 x 4
# Peak power x channels (watts)-40 x 4
be able to handle these:
(Eclipse SE6500 x2)
RMS Power Range (Watts) 5-40
Peak Power Handling (Watts) 120
(Kicker 07DS400 x2)
RMS Power Range (Watts) 6-25
Peak Power Handling (Watts) 50
The kickers would go in the front and the Eclipse in the back. Would the reciever be able to handle them? I honestly don't know much about this and I've tried to look for explanations but most are confusing. lol

Loose tolerances mainly. All those bolts, nuts, washers, heat shields, glass segments, loose dash trim and anything else that can rattle will do so. Also pulling apart doors and parcel shelves to fit audio equipment often makes things worse.Stereo wrote:Why's that?
Basically, you'll have a sound system that would sound alright in a house, but in a car will cause everything that's loose or poorly fitted (just about everything in an old car) to buzz away. Plus the mixed acoustic qualities of seats/plastic/glass/metal means you can never, EVER get it to sound properly good.

Re: ~Stereo's '97 Corolla *-W00T-*~
The only thing that "rattled" in a sense when I installed the stereo in my Skyline wasn't a rattle at all. It was interference coming from the amp the rear speakers were wired into that was causing engine noise to go through the stereo. That said, what I have is a pretty solid setup and the speakers only cost me AU$120 all up. Rockford Fosgates.
Re: ~Stereo's '97 Corolla *-W00T-*~
Well, I got the 4" Kickers installed a while ago, and now I've replaced my crappy stereo with a shiny new Sony CDX-GT340. I love it, the sound is much better, the EQ customization is more gradual than my old stereo, and it's got an AUX input, yay.
Pics soon.

Double-post, but I've ordered some Alpine Type-R 6.5" speakers for the rear. Been in Russia for a month and my relatives have given me a total of $616 in cash. Went crazy and decided to order some bright white LEDs to replace my interior illumination. My transmission light burned out a long time ago anyways.
I'd love to repaint it at a shop but that costs a huge amount of money. Those rust spots on the front of the hood kill me though.
