Intersection unsignaled

Post by ^Sparco^ »

My new driving route lately has a left turn from a divided highway that is unsignaled. I pull into the turn lane and wait for an opening to go. I have an issue with something this simple though.

Either I'm doing it wrong or I'm being followed by people who don't know what to do either. When I wait to turn I wait back behind the intersection so that a car turning left in the opposite direction would turn in front of me.

Lately I've been getting cars from behind me who will pull past me and wait on the opposite side of the intersection so that a car coming in the opposite direction would have to pass in front of them and then turn left behind them. In this way cars turning left have to take turns instead of a steady flow  I find this very odd and disturbing. I've looked all over the place for the correct way of handling this type of insection but I can't find anything on it.

So, what's the deal, anyone know?

OK...

The first picture is the way I turn. There are no traffic lights but I don't see how that should change anything. I wait in my lane untill the traffic is clear and then go.

The second is the way people around me are trying to do the turn. They past the middle of the intersection to turn behind the other car leaving me with a big WTF face.

The only reason I ask is because so many people do number 2.

as Driving Instructor I think this is where I come in handy... :D

and yeah PSZETA is right.

the second pic cross half the intersection then wait... this way you make a much better curve

and a much more important thing... your side of the road is the RIGHT side (unless you live in the UK or AUS etc)

and you don't interupt the traffic (blue car) from the other road

nope, neither one is right, but the first way is closer to right. you should pull out into the intersection, to wait until it's safe to go, but not so far that a car coming from the other side has to go behind you. That is never safe, as you can't see through that car to see if there is oncoming traffic. It's the same at a signalled intersection without a turn arrow. However, it also depends on if there is traffic coming at you from the left or right. In that case you have to look at the intersection, if it's wide enough for you to go into the middle while not hindering traffic from any direction, then you pull out further, but if it's a small intersection where pulling out will hinder traffic coming from any direction, then keep doing what you are doing, better safe than sorry. I drive for a living, as well as I am a part time driving instructor, and if I taught anyone to pull out so they make their turn behind another car coming in the opposite direction I'd be fired instantly, so not sure where that applies, cuz it sure doesn't here.

did I miss something...

my pic is a extra on the original...

I can't really make a good clear view on his first one... but looking at the second one I asume the first one is like this:

I made a new pic:

for UPCOMING TRAFFIC:

due note that the first post pic is a extra reason

well knowing you come from Spain, I asume you use the same rules as the rest of europe (99.9% of rule :D)
but then again last time I was in spain I thought I was in maniac driving land

now about this pic:
here in The Netherlands (also europe for those who don't know :P) you should do it like in the pic. reasons:
- you can see if there is something coming from the other direction
if there is a car in front of you (like in you pic 1) you can't see ANYTHING and have to wait till he is gone (and he can't see till you are gone (or have a small car and he can look right over you :p)
- you don't obstruct any other trafic (see pic in first post i made)
- most important of all YOUR side is the right side (exept you know where
 )

I would also get fired if I taught someone to turn from the far lane, because they could pull out in front of someone going straight. Maybe it's because here in Canada we generally have very wide roads, and none of this is a problem usually, but from the places I've visited in Europe the roads are usually very narrow, which may account for the difference in how these things are handled. :?

reasons we don't do this

The first way is right in Finland (right hand side traffic). If both are turning left, they pass in front of each other (neither will need to stop). If the other is turning left and the other is going straight (not turning or turning right), the one turning left will yield.

As far as the poll goes, I've never even seen anyone try the second way. So I guess both options...

You know... about the person who comes behind you.... if he comes behind you and knows you cant move just any time you want but only when its safe... its hes fault, not yours... if he blames you for an accident , just tell them this...
If he gets behind you and starts buging you with the horn, give him the finger just befour you cross and leave HIM with the WTF face.

hehe, that little pic was just a joke, but here in Canada if we ever did anything that was suggested like that and a cop saw us we would get a ticket, for sure. Here you are not allowed to block or hinder traffic in any direction, so that stopping in the middle is a huge no-no. (well, in theory anyway :) )

In Finland too. Stopping in the middle of a crossroad is stricktly forbidden.

atleast here where I live the roads are small and we made the middle part in some places so you can cross half the road without obstructing any other traffic  they build it in busy places so you get a chance to cross the busy road in steps... instead of waiting half your life for a chance to clear the complete road... but standing still in the middle of the road on a normal crossing is a big nono also... but still alot (of woman :P) do it...

we got alot of places where you HAVE to do it like I said... the arrows on the road tell you to.. :D

we are a small country with loads of roads and even more rules
