I agree with TheStig. That 323 isn't the same as a Escort. The car company's that Ford owns are very recently taken over. This count's for Mazda to.

are owned by ford not so long... atleast not since the days of the Escort!

That particular Mazda 323 wasn't sold as an Escort (although the North American market did get that 323 rebadged, and possibly rebodied, and sold as a Mercury Tracer). However, the generation after (which started in 1990), the 323 and the Escort used the same platform.

Eh, close enough, I believe there were also shared engines (at least one), interior components and body components, so it's close enough to being the same car.

but still same platform does NOT mean same car. other things the same can make it a close match but that is about it.

there are loads of cars build on the same platform
the Volvo S40 and Focus are build on the same platform but they are COMPLETELY difirent cars. they don't even look CLOSE

volkswagen does the same, the Volkswagen Golf Golf Plus and Touran are build on the same base together with some other cars in the V.A.G.
but the Touran is even a other size then the Golf V
