Something wrong?

I have a ASUS 6600LE 256mb AGP, and the program SmartDoctor keeps saying that the GPU is overheating, but Im not doing anything graphics wise, so is it faulty? or could it possibly be that I have a 250W PSU when it recommends a 300+?

Do you have a separate power supply to the card? I think so, if you haven't connected the power cable to the card do so. If you already have done that i guess that your PSU is to weak.

Yes it would but the fan doesn't work, i have a GF 7800 GFX so i now

Ceano, What you are talking about varies from card to card. I have nearly the same card as Razkit, and to my knowledge, plugging the ACU directly to the card gives it extra juice, but is not the only source of power.

Click on the nVidia tab in the bottom right corner, to nVidia Display, monitor name and then to temperature settings.

Didnt find that, but here is a picture of what im talkin about... I think the program is wacko... If it does burn-up, i can get a new 1.... but its getting annoying, even if my pc is doing nothing, idle, the thing comes up...

Is the fan working on the card?
I still think that your power supply is to weak, i had to by a new one 550W because my 350W could not deliver what the card required.

Yes the fan is working. I have asked my dad to order a new PSU because the card recomended 300W+ and i have a 250W, and if my card dies, then its my dad's fault because I asked him about 2 weeks ago...

It could be something as dumb as the card not reading its temperature right. But 250W indeed sounds low.

A guy at a Computer Repair Shop, a very weathly person, has 15 pc's setup at the store and he had a 6600LE with a 255W PSU, he said just in case to get a bigger PSU, Im trying that right now, getting 2, 1 for me and one for my dad...

You will be notified if the card doesn't get enough power.

A GFX card doesn't die because of a weak PSU. Open up your case and feel if the heatsink is hot.

The Heatsinc isnt hot.... Im actually going to buy a new cooler... A Zalman Fatal1ty FS-V7. I do want to OC this but I need a few other essentials first fixing the stupid Smart Doctor and getting a better PSU 450W hopefully

Those kind of programs tend to have glitches like those, depending on drivers and systems. If you feel the heatsink is not hot then kill the damn prog.
About PSU, it is advisable to have one with decent power, since it doesn't stress the system so much. (Low power supply tends to crash the system)

What's the temp reading in the Nvidia driver panel and/or Rivatuner ?

Could be a bad sensor, program glitch, or the heatsink is poorly connected to the GPU ...

I suspect an incorrectly read sensor read by the program. 123 deg C is unbelieveable hot (above the boiling point of water), if it were truly that hot you could propably even smell something "cooking".

A could rule of thumb though; if you can touch the heatsink, that is it doesn't burn your fingers, then the surface of the heatsink is below 55-60 deg C (the fingertip heat pain threshold, approximately). Even though the sensor measures the chip temperature, not the heatsink surface, feeling the surface will give some idea.

Maybe it's reading the temp in Kelvin, but displaying in Celcius.

(Kelvin = Celcius + 100)

Heh.

Allthough, it's actually Kelvin = Celcius + 273.

(Zero deg K being the absolute zero temperature, which is -273.15 dec C)

I'd call ASUS ( Assuming that you have ASUS because you are using an utility from them ) since it doesn't seem like you have a flawless card. A crappy sensor or a not correctly mounted heatsink is what I think.

And get the normal VF700-Cu, cheaper and the same.

Ok I decided to contact ASUS, and this is what they said to my message.

My Email:
own a N6600LE and I am happy with the product, but there is a problem with the graphic card it self
or the program Smart Doctor. Smart Doctor pops up randomly when my PC is not doing anything, and
it says that my GPU is overheating. I dont think that this is the case because I opened my case and
felt the fan/GPU and it doesnt feel hot. I think that the graphics card is either defective or something
is wrong with Smart Doctor, what should I do about it?

Their Reply:
Suggest reapplying thermal compound to the heatsink under the fan on the card if you have the same issue then most probably the Smart Docter is not picking it up correctly.

WTF?

Return the card, if you don't get a card that is working correctly it is defect and you have the right to have it replaced with a new one (warranty).

Just remove the sink and see if the thermal comprund is equally found all over the chip. If it is not you will have to add more grease.
