Introducing Nintendo Wii

Post by 2furio »

Revolution gets an official name.

April 27, 2006 - Nintendo revealed this morning that the official name of its formerly codenamed Revolution system is Nintendo Wii.

The Big N explained the decision behind the name in a statement, which we've provided below:

Introducing... Wii.

As in "we."

While the code-name Revolution expressed our direction, Wii represents the answer. Wii will break down that wall that seperates videogame players from everybody else. Wii will put people more in touch with their games... and each other. But you're probably asking: What does the name mean?

Wii sounds like "we," which emphasizes the console is for everyone. Wii can easily be remembered by people around the world, no matter what language they speak. No confusion. No need to abbreviate. Just Wii.

Wii has a distinctive "ii" spelling that symbolizes both the unique controllers and the image of people playing it. And Wii, as a name and a console, brings something revolutionary to the world of videogames that sets it apart from the crowd.

So that's Wii. But now Nintendo needs you. Because it's really not about you or me. It's about Wii. And together, Wii will change everything.

Revolution was soo much better... I think Nintendo are trying too hard to appeal to the wider audience... Tho to be honest Playstation "3" isn't exactly creative.

Hey, at least they've kept the same flow of naming their console throughout the whole playstation series, and not gone and stuffed the name up

Prime example being the Nintendo console family

even tho the name is quite odd... i do like their reasoning behind it, like the crap about everyone playing together and all.... but I just don't see how I can go to a store and ask to buy a Nintendo Wii without lauging unctrollably like a school kid, because sounds like the slang word for urinating...

Damn it I knew nintendo would do that. Revolution was much better. But I just want to see the games that are going to be on it like Red Steel!!
It may also be worth noting that "ii" means "good" in Japanese.

Well, what you should do is just keep calling it Revolution. HTe customer impose the product, not the company.

Doesn't matter what they call it, I'm still going to call it the Revolution

That's what it started out as (just like Windows Longhorn now known as Windows Vista)
Plus the "unofficial" names (which to me is bs because all the time it was being praised as the revolution) sounded a hell of a lot better

This is true, but IMHO, Vista sounds a lot better than Longhorn. Made me think of this guy. On the other hand, Revolution sounds a helluva lot better than Wii.

Even though I'm still wondering what the #### Nintendo was thinking... It's just a name. I'm still getting it because I'll be able to download NES, Genesis, SNES, and N64 games for it. And it'll be backwards compatible with GCN games. Wii!

What is so special about the Wiiiiiiiiiiiiiii (like Sir Ibi a other word for taking a weewee)

To be honest I never cared for the any of the Nintento consoles exept for the first one. at that time it was original, and so was Mario. the first one was... after that it went downhill fast..with all the spin offs

where are they now Mario 78363.1?

Not if you've seen the demo video of a Nintendo Wii (rofl) . The controller mimics the movement of your hand, so if you'r playing a sword fighting game, you have to move your arm around in a similar fashion as if your really holding and fighting with a sword. The same goes for conducting an orchestra, shooting and cooking games ( all show cased in the video)

Btw the video shows some interesting things, like you can get an extention to a one handed controller, and this separate controller has a joystick-like toggle, similar to the PS1 & 2 controllers.

ooh man stuff like that can only come from Japan... really they love that shiznit.. the more you can interact with the hardware itself the more they like it..
If they get a mic in the controler they can play Karaoke... that would make it a best seller in Japan...

I could not feel more stupid if I have to wave a controler.. I already feel stupid they way I act with a controler

 I know how you feel. When I played Twisted Metal for the first time I went crazy with the controller. "OMG TURN LEFT!!!" And then I would move my arms to the left and twist them all crazy as if it would help me drive better.

There where pics taken of me playing on the PS2 a while ago and I the console almost went to every side (with my arms/body still attached  )

Can't imagine how stupid it looks using a controler like this...

how do you play Mario with that... going up and down with the controler to jump on the enemy??

sorry the combo Mario and Nintento are still in my mind as 1.. and yeah I still feel like Nintento never got beyond the 2D GFX of Mario bros

They even had a '3D' Mario on SNES. I guess you could consider it 3D, anyway.

The only time I really got into Nintendo, were the days of Pokemon… many, 'MANY' moons ago  . Hearing this latest news about little miss Wii, I can say Nintendo certainly have a good reputation of making a fool of themselves.

You do know that toggle will make the Wii controller resemble some bizare sex toy!

We'll have kids going "i feel dirty" while they play with the joystick!

Err . . . no.

It's been dubbed as a nunchaku. Your small mind probably prohibits you from knowing what that even is.
