Sick of Windows Movie Maker?
Yeah, so am I. Windows Movie Maker still has its bugs in it, and frankly, I'm a bit tired of shaky frames around the transitions when compressing at around 1mbps or higher. Today, I was watching a rerun Call For Help on TechTV, and they showed off an application, a free application, that does video editing. It's called Avid FreeDV, but you can also import your video files, and audio. I don't know if it does transitions yet, but I'll be downloading it to find out soon. It only does MOV I think, but I'll have to find out for sure.

There's a couple of programs I tested as well. I was most pleased with Ulead Mediastudio Pro 7. Although the trial version will give you a big red x over everything you do, if you manage to get the full version cheap somewhere, you'll be very satisfied with it. It has tonnes of transition effects, filters, text effects...
Ulead Videostudio is a light alternative especially as you can get it free (I got it with my gfx card and with my dvd burner), but it isn't nearly as powerful as mediastudio. It gets the job done though.
