[Beta Test] NFSUnlimited.net Carbon score rankings

Post by Bojan »

I'd like to invite you to test a new project that we've been working on for the past week. The project is basically a Need for Speed Carbon score board with all gametypes except canyon supported. It is based on uploading your shadow from which the time, car and track are extracted.

To participate, upload your shadows here:
http://www.nfsunlimited.net/?p=tl

Right now only top 5 scores for each race are available, in the future you can expect
- all scores for every track
- top scores for track per car
- integration with your showroom profile
- downloading of shadows to run against them in your own game
- ...

Also we don't yet have a good name for the service, suggestions are welcome.

Awesome - really nice to go away for the weekend and then return to find my baby has been brought to life! Needs a tidy-up certainly, but the basic upload/leaderboard functionality is clearly working well.

IMO this should be a separate site section, listed in the left panel alongside the showroom and so on. A personal leaderboard showing all the user's times and their ranks on each leaderboard would be great in each user's showroom garage area, with links to get to the leaderboards directly from there.

As for a name for the section.. hmm.. how about "NFSC Shadow Leaderboards", and just "Leaderboards" for short (ie in the left navigation panel). I think the name should be short and to the point.

A few beta observations..
  • The text "You can find a shadow in c:\\Documents & Settings\\My Documents\\[[Your username]]NFS Carbon\\SHADOWXXX To find out which shadow is for which track click here." clearly doesn't need those escaped slashes.
  • The shadow upload page tells my "Shadow Shaved!!" - not sure i asked for that, but if it cuts my times down I'm grateful.. =p
  • Would be nice to see a second list of tracks/shadow numbers sorted by track name and race type to make it easier finding the shadow you just ran in game.
  • The leaderboards currently sort descending, meaning the worst times are ranked highest.
Small stuff, easily fixed.

Wishlist...
  • Click a leaderboard title bar in the overall listing and be taken to the full leaderboard for that track.
  • Click a shadow time and download that shadow into my game so I can run against it.
  • World peace.
Great job Bojan! (+YaelDjiel +TheGravedigger +ME) =P

Several features have been added today, including top 100 scores for every track, detail view and download of every shadow uploaded.

To make a shadow do the following:
GT wrote:run the race ranked
choose record shadow
at the end of the race, press 3 to see the shadow

They're offline stats. You can't save a shadow when you're racing online.

I uploaded three shadows today, but I seem to be having a problem with one of them. I have shadows for only four courses, three of them were done today. What I thought should be my Silverton Way sprint shadow is filed under Troy checkpoint. I double checked to make sure it was one of the shadows I recorded today, and the time corresponds to my Silverton run.

Edit: Just ran a Troy checkpoint and saved a shadow. Wanted to see where that shadow would be saved on here. Got a Unrecognized Track error back. This was for shadow051. Everything else I tried looks good. I think 052 might be Silverton Way sprint.

Hmm, what are the particulars of your game.. version 1.2/1.3? Normal/Collector's Edition? Retail/EA Downloader? UK/EU/US?

Patched to version 1.3. Collectors Edition, U.S. version. Originally bought it retail, aka installed via a DVD.

Ah, we found the problem - our track list had some funked up shadow ids for Silverton Way Sprint and Troy Checkpoint. The problem is now fixed. Thx for the heads-up.

No problem. Uploaded my very slow Troy Checkpoint shadow. Lol.

I'm really liking this feature. Certainly makes it far easier for me to keep track of my times, rather than opening the game or waiting for the EA site to load up. It would be nice to see this really catch on and see what tracks people on this board are really good at.

This is motivating me to do less online, not that I ever did much in the first place, and try more quick races to see how far I can push some of my slowbie times. After recently unlocking the BMW, I was far too enamored with how that car handles on the downhill sprints. I need to go back to pushing my Lancer Evo more and more, see where I can max it out. Too many Audis dominating the leaderboards on EA's site. :P

All I can say is, you can tell the people who drive with a steering wheel and us poor mugs that still use the keyboard - my time is 20 seconds slower than GT in the same car!!!

At least I hope that is the reason - probably I just suck :P

I use a steering wheel. So my times just reflect where that my techniques and lines still need a lot of improvement.

I wouldn't worry too much about trying to stack up to GT at this point. I've seen his name amongst the top rankings on a bunch of courses on the EA site. Trying to get close to his times is a good goal, but no shame in being beaten by him either.

lol, Darren why don't you just bite the bullet, get with the program and get yourself a wheel or an analog pad? As you suspect, it does make a world of difference. I use a PS2 controller btw - I have a decent wheel (Logitech Momo Racing) but I find the controller better suited to NFS games.

Ecksoa, most of my canyon sprint times are with BMW (all except Kinfe's Edge - had to pull out the Audi to beat Bojan there). I agree, the BMW is perfect for canyon.

nfs + wheel is no good for really powerful competition such as GT
analog pad will always work best for these types of racing games
