There are times, however, that a normal car driver may want to make use of double clutching. Many manual transmission drivers realize the advantages of downshifting in slippery conditions. Rather than brake and skid, a car with a manual transmission can make use of the engine to slow down - thereby eliminating the possibility of a skid. But even with synchronizers, a driver trying to shift from fifth gear into second could have some trouble. In this case, double clutching by pausing in neutral and giving the engine a little gas to match speeds of the engine and gearbox, can allow such a drastic shift.
Some driving purists maintain that it's still the proper way to shift, and makes for a much smoother ride. It eliminates some of the jumpiness sometimes felt in a manual transmission car, and it decreases the stress on the gearbox. In any case, double clutching a skill worth having in emergency downshift situations, and not very difficult to learn.and many heavy duty trucks to this day still do not use synchros

In an 'emergency' situation as you described, it would be much easier to just tap the accelerator before you bring the clutch back in. You don't need to double-clutch.
I frequently use that technique when I approach a roundabout or steep hill, or any other time when I need to downshift without braking. If I could, I would heel-toe every shift, but the pedals in my car are too far apart, and I wear work boots most of the time.

I had a play around with double clutching yesterday...Ill be honest, it still seems pointless. As Bogan said, its actually easier to just blip the throttle to match the revs.

I know what I meant ...you can do clutchless changes but it's a different technique to double clutching. You need to double clutch if your gear synchros fail (which used to happen quite alot on the old G60 and VR6 gearboxes) which is why my dad taught me.boganbusman wrote:How can you double clutch if your clutch has failed?
