My in-two-week's-time computer will be as follows:
* Thermaltake Kandalf Tower with LCS (black... because black rules, mkay?)
* Asus P5N32-E SLI motherboard (the 680i SLI version)
* Thermaltake Tough Power 750W power supply
* Intel E6320 core 2 duo processor
* Seagate 320GB SATAII hard drive
* XFX 8800GTS XXX 320MB video card
* Pioneer DVR-212BK 18x SATA
Gonna cost me $2211 for all that, but will be worth it in my opinion. Afterwards, going to grab some extra stuff like:
* Asus MW201U 20inch LCD Monitor
* Logitech G5 laser mouse
* Logitech G11 keyboard
* Logitech X-530 speaker set (just to fill in time until I could be bothered grabbing a set of Logitech Z-5500 for $419, I'll just leave the X-530 constantly hooked up to the PS3 when I get around to buying one)
That small bit will cost me an extra $636 so the total computer package cost (of course I'm putting it together myself) will finally cost $2847 (and whatever extra for the cost of fuel to drive to the shop
).

Is it worth the extra cost though?PSZeTa wrote:Core2Duo is better than X2, yes..
On Wednesday I'll be getting this:
AMD AM2 x2 4600+
Gigabyte GA-M55plus-S3G
A-DATA 1GB (512x2) DDR2 PC-6400 RAM
160GB Seagate SATAII HDD
256MB MSI 8600GT OC-ed
Asus 18x SATA DVD-RW
Thermaltake Soprano case
Coolermaster Extreme 600W PSU
~AU$900
Considering I'm on a tight budget, would I still be better off with a Core2Duo?

Answering your question bbm, yes it would be better going for c2d, but would blow the budget a nice bit... like 200-300 extra.boganbusman wrote:Considering I'm on a tight budget

Core 2 Duo smokes the A64 X2 in overclocking, so if you want to OC, then there's only 1 choice.boganbusman wrote:Is it worth the extra cost though?PSZeTa wrote:Core2Duo is better than X2, yes..

However, the A64 X2 typically offers better performance for the $$$ at stock performance, so if you aren't going to overclock, the A64 X2 is a slightly better choice.
A64 X2 4600+ = $118BrontoX wrote:You should get a E6300 and overclock it as it will blow even a X6800 at +3.0Ghz or if you don't want to overclock then a E6600 is extremely good and the cost over the X2 4600+ is worth it. In gaming the E6600 beats the X2 4600+ by a 15-30%.
C2D E6600 = $226
The 4600+ is more comparable to the E4300 in terms of performance, with the 4600+ being a little better (at stock speeds), and they're about the same price ...

I thought it would be about time to post the system specs. Not a true gaming machine, but it's good enough.
Intel(R) Pentium(R) D
CPU 2.80 GHz
1GB (2x512MB) NECC Dual Channel DDR2 533MHz SDRAM
16X Dual Drives with Dual LayerWrite Capabilities
320GB HD
256MB PCle(TM)x16 NVIDIA(R) GeForce(R) 7300LE TurboCache w/TV-Out, VGA & DVI
= $1600(GST Inc)AUD
And I think that's about it.

First Time, Long Time...
Hey, long time no post, had school and such. I'm going to post stats for my desktop, my current laptop, the laptop I want to get, and the laptop I'm probably going to get (second choice). (Be advised, my current laptop is a thin-and-light business one not meant for gaming from 2003)
Desktop:
Dell Optiplex GX520
Pentium 4 Processor (3.0 Ghz)
1GB RAM
19" SXGA screen (Acer)
100GB 5400 RPM HDD
CD-RW/DVD-ROM Combo Drive
Windows XP Professional Edition
Its a decent computer for most uses, but only has the stock Intel Extreme Graphics Accelorator. My dad is an IT person, so we are upgrading it to an NVIDIA Chip. It's the home computer in my family, though.
Laptop:
Dell Latitude C400
Mobile Pentium III Processor (1.1 Ghz lol)
Intel 830m Extreme Graphics (originally 32MB, firmware upgrade to 64MB)
12.1" XGA Digital Flat Panel Screen
30GB 5400 RPM HDD
512 MB RAM
Windows XP Professional
3.0lb (1.65kg) w/battery
Yeah, the stats stink, but it's a thin-and-light from 2002, what do you expect.
My dad got it from his job, so it was free. It's great for taking notes and project's because of it's size.
The laptop I want:
Acer Ferrari 5000
AMD Turion 64 X2 Processor (2.0 Ghz)
2.0GB RAM
15.4" WSXGA widescreen
ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 w/Hypermemory (512 shared, 256 stand-alone)
160 GB 5400 RPM HDD
Windows Vista Business
6.7lb w/battery
1.3 Megapixel adjustable camera
16x DVD-RW/ DVD-RAM CD/DVD Burner
It's Acer's flashiest, most expensive computer, and has the Ferrari cachet, a decent mobile processor, and pretty good standard graphics. The problem is, it costs too much and doesn't have a trackpoint (which i need on a laptop)
And the computer that I will get with the $$ from my job this summer
Acer Travelmate 6460
Intel Core 2 Duo T7200 (2.0Ghz)
4.0GB RAM
15.4" WSXGA widescreen
ATI Mobility Radeon X1300 w/Hypermemory (512 Shared, 256 Standalone)
160 GB 5400 RPM HDD
Windows Vista Business
160 GB 5400 HDD
1.3 Megapixel adjustable camera
16x DVD-RW/ DVD-RAM CD/DVD Burner
Bit less graphics, but costs less by $400, and has a trackpoint.
What do you guys think?

Thanks....I mean, it's not like I'm buying a computer with a Radeon Xpress 200
My friend made a mistake, bought a new Dell Inspiron E1501 because he thought the ATI Radeon Xpress was a standalone graphics card, and he thought it was a better idea to get an E1501 with a standard ATI card than pay extra for an E1505 with a Mobility Radeon chip...He was pretty angry when he couldn't run Battlefield 2.

Just bought a new comp
M/B : Gigabyte P35-DS4 Ultra Durable 2 Series (awesome board)
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6700
GFX: Nothing yet, buying soon 8800 Nvidia
RAM: atm only 1GB 800mhz DDR 2 to get the comp running. But i have support for upto 8gb with 4 ram slots, lol.
Sound: Well apparently the inbuilt soundcard on the P35 motherboard will rival high end sound cards so i''m not worried. Logitech 5.1 setup
Power Supply: Cooler Master 430W real power
HDD: 320GB Western Digital Sata II
Case: NZXT Guardian (Silver)
and a Logitech G25 Steering wheel that i got ages ago.
pics soon.

The 8800GTS alone takes about 250-300 watts. So a 430 watt PSU is enough, but you should get at least a 500watt PSU to give you a little more "leg room" for future additions to the computer.
