Noooooooooooooooooooooooooonnonononono . . .

The ST184R has a Camry engine. 2.2L + 99kw@5400rpm = FAIL.

Get an ST162, they have proper motors. They also look better, weigh less, and they're more fun.
I used to have one, and Jacoja06 has one too. Therefore, 2 out of 2 Celica drivers recommend that you get an ST162 8)
Actually, the ST184 has 1) a bigger engine and 2) 115kW compared to the ST162's 103kW. That's a fair bit more horsepower. Here's the website to prove it:

Are you on crack?

That link you posted is for the ST182 which has the Gen2 3S-GE. Those are quite rare and I doubt you could find one.

The ST184 has a 2.2L 5S-FE from a Camry, with 99kw.

Well Bogan is right.
The other 184 is a Convertible with a normal 3S engine.

If you go for a T18 model, then get a ST185 instead, it has a 2.0 Turbo engine and AWD, the GT4 series Celicas are pretty nice cars. best one is the ST205 but it's also the most expensive one.
The ST165 is in general relatively cheap to get, depending on where you live ofcourse.

The cheapest I could find was an ST162 @ $2,000, but I'll keep looking.

$2000 is pretty reasonable, isn't it? Finding an ST162 dirt-cheap won't be easy, unless it's in bad condition. You get what you pay for, and they aren't really a budget car.

You want something cheap, get a Corolla. Celicas are sports cars, y'know

$2000 for an ST162? Hell, I'd take even if I didn't want it, you could at least resell it for a few hundred more. Unless of course it's different where you live. Considering people are selling 1990 ST184s for close to $7000 (Rebuilt engine @ 270,000 km; has minor tuning) where I live, I'd say that you're getting a hell of a deal.

That's why I'm looking at Corollas.
The 2 grand Celica I found was in fairly bad condition, but what's the best Corolla? I'm not necessarily looking for power, although I might get a couple of minor performance mods (aftermarket exhaust, pod filter, etc.), I'm just looking for a robust learner's car that gets me from point A to point B. I found an AE93 @ 4 grand with a full sound system and a few custom interior parts, like pedals, steering wheel, gear shifter, etc, is that good enough? I might get some better wheels on it, the ones on there look really crappy.

Why not save a couple of dollars and get an AE86? They're good enough to be in Need For Speed games and they look ten times better than the AE93.

The cheapest AE86 I could find was AU$5,150 and that looked like an absolute piece of crap. The rest were upwards of AU$7000, but due to the fact that I only work part-time at Maccas and I'm still at school for anothe couple of years, I'm not paying a cent over $5000. In other words... get real.

My personal pick would be an AE92, those are good cars. I've thought about getting one myself, because I don't like using the MR2 every day . . .

First car I ever drove was a Mercedes A-Class at this Driving Experience at the Autosport show. The steering was wierd though, as I'm used to driving Karts. So spent most of the time being taught how to steer properly :D

Sorry for posting on an old topic

Nice :D I believe that was also the car that Grez learned to drive in, and I currently own one.

Seems a bit disappointing that you drive a Lexus now, but at least it's Japanese 8)

Lol thanks. I'd say it was a step up with regards to convenience and comfort. If I'm driving 120km per day, I'd prefer it be done in maximum accommodation and minimal stress (my last job was stressful enough). I like the day to wind down when I leave work, not worsened by all the traffic around here. The LS is actually remarkably reliable, with fewer problems than the MR2 had. On the other hand, it's comparatively boring against the MR2. #-o But holy christ is the Lexus surreally quiet....

That's the problem with some luxury cars, they don't have the quality sound of an AMG V8 that takes up half the car, as in the SLK55 AMG. Now THAT's a convertible/luxury car.

I wouldn't really call the SLK55 AMG a luxury car as much as a sports car that happens to be luxurious.

My LS has relatively large silencers on both exhaust pipes. It makes for a (literally) near-dead-silent exhaust note (in the cabin, you'll only hear the muffled hum of the engine). If I wanted the aggressive growl of a big block V8, I'd just get aluminum mufflers with less sound dampening. It's still a V8 engine, but it will sound like a classic big block because much of the exhaust note is determined by the muffler style. But the entire rationale behind me choosing a Lexus LS was comfort, atmosphere, and outright class, and I'd like to keep that atmosphere of relaxation intact.

Mate, looks don't make a car luxurious, neighter does the less restricted exhaust note of a car, or it's size (like american carbuilders think)
In a luxury car most people want it to be quiet so the can listing to their comforting music or just silence.
Ever noticed that the people that drive (or are driven in) high end executive cars don't drive the AMG or M or RS versions of the the brands. because a loud exhaust note can be damn annoying if you want pure luxury.
people that buy a AMG or a M class car want a luxury car that is also capable of being fast and sporty, or a sportscar that is also luxurious.
Ever seen a important goverment person or a president of a bank in a SLK55? know why? because they are not comfortable for long distances and they don't give you the option of a driver so you can sit in the back and relax.
