damn, so many variables!

and won't a RWD car wheelspin more off the line than a AWD, lets say with 600hp?

Yeah, I think steelsnake meant to write: "at big power AWD wil put it down better."

Any car will bog down if it hasn't got enough power, it's just worse with AWD.

yep, thanks for the clarification...

but exactly how much weight would a AWD system add? If you had to design a performance car, would you incorporate one?

Guess you can kiss any chance of getting a nice professional job behind a desk or something with how you're thinking.

Anyway. I spotted this at the autoshow I went to. At first glance I thought it was a new version of the Ford GT. I was wrong though. This is the Ford Shelby GR-1.

The one I saw at the autoshow though wasn't silvery chrome like that. It was just regular metallic silver with racing stripes.

Like this.

The weirdest concept and possibly the absolute COOLEST concept I saw was the Ford Syn.

Here are some comments about it from the Ford company.
Ford wrote:As the population shifts back to the big cities, you'll need a rolling urban command center. Enter the SYNUS concept vehicle, a mobile techno sanctuary sculpted in urban armor and inspired by the popular B-cars of congested international hotspots.

When parked and placed in secure mode, SYNUS deploys protective shutters over the windshield and side glass. Small windows on the flanks and roof are non-opening and bullet-resistant. The SYNUS concept also signals security through its use of a driver-side dial operated combination lock on the B-pillar.

On its welcoming inside, the SYNUS makes any mission possible. The interior can transform into a mini-home theater with multi-configuration seating and multi-media work station, all controlled by a Wi-Fi laptop. Use the 45-inch flat-screen LCD from Sharp for Internet research, DVD viewing or any screening needs.
Makes me want to get one just from the bullet-proofness. :P

The GR1 was featured in Autocar about 3 years ago. I remember being in spain at the time and thinking it looked fantastic.

About 150kg if you were going to covert a FWD car. That's just a guess, going by the weight of a GTFour.
It will vary for different types of cars.

No way.
The added weight, complexity, running costs, power loss, and fuel consumption far outweigh any benefits, imo.

Also, AWD handling on the limit is far less predictable than RWD handling. And AWD cars are generally less fun to drive, as you can't go powersliding everywhere.

But if you want to get somewhere fast on a windy road or circuit in the wet, AWD is the only way forward 8)

You're probably right, but on other topics people claim it's easier to drift in an AWD car (eg.Evo) than a similar RWD car...

@danyutz-It's an aquired taste...

I'd say that's only if you are going really, stupidly fast. Otherwise no.

Not even then really. When I had the RS2-specced S2, I used to track it alot and never once managed to powerslide or drift it properly. Hammering it out of Quarry at Castle Combe and coming on boost with at the end of the corner usually resulted in the back end sliding about a bit but hardly what you could call a drift.

Whereas a mate of mine I sold my M3 once tried to take the same corner at the same speed, and ended up on the grass facing the way he came. 8)

It's called the Syn(US) not Synergy. :|

And yes, I think boxes are getting to be more common.

Actually the Nissan Cube isn't new...

It was featured in GT4 so it would have had to have been atleast four or five years since the concept...

@koenigsegg- DRAMATIC MUSIC!!!!!!!!!! Little voice in the back of your head.... Why don't you cut the back of your head out before it makes you do something else crazy, like smash your computer, kill your mates, commit suicide etc.

Anyway, yes, I was just playing it last night and I realized that boxes are the way things are moving...

Why, Jesus, WHY!!!!!
