Ya, you should be wondering why there are so many for sale, especially when it's not a very common car in Aus.

Apart from that, those 1.8 A4s are dreadfully slow. Your R31 would make toast out of it.

o_O I kinda disagree with the "not very common in Aus" bit, there are plenty about, and I'm not necessarily looking for performance. If I was looking for performance I'd get the larger engined one (pretty sure its 2.6), I'm looking more for one with at least a) a better set of wheels, and b) a better looking interior. There was a '99 A6, but that would be expensive as f*** to insure...

I've once again changed my mind. I have one of two options, one of which I definitely WILL be going for. The first is a Mazda 929 with Leather Trim option, 3L V6, 4-wheel steer, and down the track some dished rims, maybe 17s or 18s. I saw one of these with some dished Lensos, black gloss paint and matching window tint, and my god the VIP look was smexy...

My second choice is, despite bogans advice, a Toyota Soarer GT Limited: leather, 4L V8, electric seat adjustment (just like a Merc ), and I'd probably be going the same route as I would with a 929. Some lowered suspension wouldn't hurt either

Performance says "buy the Soarer gawdammit forget everything else", but the 929....I dunno. It's rare for one thing, this Lenso-toting one is the only one I've seen ever, and lowered....just....wow......I'm torn between them.

About Audis not being that popular in Australia, recent figures suggest that with the new generation of cars, Audi sales are fast catching up Mercedes-Benz and BMW. And I would pick an A4 over a 3series, but pherhaps not a C-class...

I would go for the soarer, but it's a V8, and with fuel prices going up...

No the SC400 is the Lexus, 4L V8 version with leather seats etc. and thats the one I'm talking about. The I6 Soarer is the SC300 with (to my knowlwdge) a Supra engine but without the turbo, although there are some with twinturbo.

And, technically, the SC400 (4L V8) came first and the SC300 was added when they started making the 2JZ (Supra engine). (The 1JZ was already being made, but the 2JZ was not yet.)

Ok I've heard that rotaries are hard to maintain, but just how hard? Cause I've been looking at a couple of FC convertibles as a replacement for the 31 and to say the least they look pretty mean (slightly offset massive bonnet scoop ftw) but is it going to be hard to maintain with the 13B? Info pl0x. Also which is better the 1st gen Miata ('89-'92) or the 2nd gen (think it's '00 to '02 or something?)

Rotaries are not really hard to maintain, but they are high-maintenance.
Regular servicing, always changing spark plugs/keeping it well tuned, and taking good care of the cooling system (because rotaries generate A LOT of heat).
If you can be bothered to tinker on it almost every weekend then it will be fine, but if you're lazy like me then it's not such a good idea.

As for MX5s, I've been told that the NBs handle better (in stock form) but I think it just comes down to personal taste and budget more than anything. Perhaps Grez/Haz could fill you in on this a bit more.

I've also been looking at Galant VR-4s because they're 4WD and come under my price max nicely. Anything I should know?

It's a Mitsubishi Sorry, I just don't really like Mitsus apart from Evos, but even then I still wouldn't buy one.

Think about it this way: The older and more complicated a car is, the more likely you are to have problems with it.
The VR-4 has 4WD, 4WS, turbo, and it's getting old. And I don't know if parts are commonly available for them.

VR-4 has very few parts available, and in general probably isn't worth it. If you want a non-Lancer Mitsubishi then a 3000GT VR-4 / GTO TT-RS or an Eclipse or FTO would be a better bet.

Heck, if you're looking for a sedan, you (being in Australia) are far luckier than me in that you have any chance at getting a Toyota Mark II or Chaser. I'd think a JZX90 Mark II might be worth looking into, it's strangely awesome-looking for a sedan and comes with the 1JZ-GTE or the 2JZ-GE.

That said, used 350Zs are pretty cheap where I live - around $16K USD.

I'm looking at 15k AUD so....350Z isn't an option. I'm not necessarily looking for sedans, pretty much anything under 15k that is decent and either Jap or German is all I'm looking for. These are some of the options I have been looking at:

R34 25GT
Chaser
Supra 64MA71 (I actually kinda prefer that style compared to the JZA80)
300ZX Twin Turbo (although I've heard the engine isn't as reliable as Nissan's other motors)
Celica ST185R GT4
Celica ZZT231 SX
E34 BMW 5-Series (last resort of sorts, they'd be expensive to maintain)
MY99 WRX
DC2 Integra Type-R (A bit above my price max but it'd be worth it)
