They're similar enough. What I do, since most forums have a different colour for every other post, is sample both colours and blend them together to make a single colour somewhere in the middle to use as a dither.

Oh, well actually... I didn't fully read it, that's actually a great idea. I just scanned it (while apparently failing miserably) and thought you were showing the difference in quality through gif vs png-8.

8-bit .PNGs actually can't pull of transparency any better than .GIFs. Just like .GIFs, 8-bit .PNGs don't support semi-opaque pixels, whereas 24-bit .PNGs do.
