r34-gtr man, you can be assured that the skyline blow-off IS the skyline blow-off. It changes a bit depending on pressure. Regular blow is from the same skyline used in Fast/furious. The upgraded turbo for example is from one of the do-luck skylines: http://www.do-luck.co.uk/content/news/s ... 121003.php ...So you'lll be covered. The spool sound is also from the skyline, and changes like the real thing (hollowy at the top end under hi pressure etc.)
I can't remember if the RX7 one is actually from the RX7 since the rotary sound covers up a lot of the turbo blows so it's tricky to record. Then again, turbo sound change on how you tune it, how you mount it etc, so a certain car can have a very different sounding turbo or supercharger. Therefor, turbos are grouped by style and size. Overall we recorded a whole bunch of turbo's, supercharges and spools under various pressures, and noticed that a lot of them sound very similar unless you screw them up a bit (tune them for over-pressure or under-pressure etc.). Yep, it results in less power, but a better sound :)

engine sounds

Post by StreekG »

i thought the AE86 sounded good from that outrun video...
im quite impressed with engine sounds, the Monaro sounded awesome
although i have to agree that the STi will be the best sounding, those things sound awesome on the streets

cool. The AE86 is one of our favorites as well. You'll like how it progresses in the game. One of the recordings is from an old AE86 which was owned by a young teenager. It was quite beat up, but sounded wicked. You'll hear the tail-pipe rattle problem in the game :)

I'm curious though, what's is a "monaro" ?

the GTO has a scary sound, far more agressive than the skyline!

...and wait until you upgrade the GTO :)

The skyline's engine is smooth, refined. In all reality it's actually a fairly quiet engine. Upgrading it will bring out more of the grunge and growl.

As an FYI, basic (real) 350z's, Supra's and Skyline's all sound a bit similar.... low-end tone, with little "rasp". For example, in 2 fast 2 furious, supras were replaced by a 300zx to make it sounds more "raspy" and agressive. When you hear Supra's etc. on the street, you mostly hear low-end tone, something that doesn't translate well on speakers as sounding agressive.

Hope this explains some. cheers !

I hope the Audis V6s sound good. Cuz it's will be the only cars I'll be driving.

The TT is the V6, right? :)

I believe so. We ended up recorded some souped Jetta VR6's for it since they sounded better. My buddy verruckt at VWvortex.com told me the exhaust and engine are very very similar sounding. Airy motherf*ckers those things were.... :) Hard to record. I couldn't do a direct side by side comparison, but I trust him on this.

I think that the RX7 sounds the best. I have all the level 3 upgrades and it now sounds like a 13B J Port Rotary at 10,000RPM it's absolutely on the mark with the sound. To bad at idle it doesnt make the classic whab whab whab whab rotary engine noise.

howdy! The RX7 and RX8 idles are from the actual cars, so I'm curious why/how it wouldn't represent the real sound.

Well the idle sounds fine for a rotary which is stock but the idle sound of my rx7 in nfsu2 with all level 3 upgrades still sounds stock to me. I have seen many rx7's in real life with 13B J ports and at idle they sound amazing i was just a bit disapointed with the idle sound of the rotarys in this game.

chuck d2, you´ve done a great job with thosse engine sounds, the best i´ve heard so far! :D

I hope this will show some other publishers how important good engine sounds are in a racing game!

Yes chuck, it's also nice to get someone involved with the game over here.

I'm surprised about VR6 Motor sounding similar to V6 Audi (the latter is a newer engine and has a bit different sound) but all in all, they both should sound rather 'muted' and low, very linear pickup and dilivery, I guess the right word is 'creamy' but not the growl of muscle cars of course. All Audi units sound very nice, of course the 20V I5 Turbo being the best of them all - but that's history! :) Looking forward to the A3 - that one has to be the V6, while TT can still be the 1.8T 225hp unit. We'll see.

thanks for all the feedback. it was a team effort, so the credits go to all of the NFSU2 audio team.

btw, there's another fun thing in the game. if you turn all the music off (in FE and in-game) you get a whole other replacement. Listen for the dudes fighting about a car in the back-room in one of the shops for example. You'll get the idea. You'll also be able to hear cars racing in the distance much more clearly.

Anyway, lots of hidden audio features in this game, especially when upgrading parts. Have fun with them!

btw, if any of you don't agree with the reviews, let the reviewers know!
