Anybody remember old school racing?

Post by Sweeper »

In the days of NFSU2 has anybody at all looked back at the past?
I have recently been playing some old racing games from the DOS era.
And I was wondering if anybody had played a game like Death Rally?

Hehehe, had some fancy cars, pretty good game for a top down racer, all arcade but that was the fun of the game, in NFSU 1 I missed those 2 miniguns to deal with Chad ;)

I miss Carmageddon, 3 ways to win, Win the race, Destroy all your opponents, or mow down all the pedistrians (including sheep, cows, mooses, penguins, etc.)

Death Rally was probably the first racing game I tried and that I mastered.
I just loved the big guns and the abillity to use something else when you didn't have power or cornering skills.

(Back then I was 100% grip and didn't have a clue about drift)

Also I remember the late hours at school with Death Rally, sweet memories.

This is old school racing

Test Drive 1 = C64

Crazy Cars 1 + 2 = Atari ST

Stunt Car Racer = Atari ST

Nitro = Atari ST

Hard Drivin' = Amiga

Pitstop = C64

Enduro Racer = C64

Network Q RAC Rally - The one with the Ford Cosworth - Not the Celica = Amiga

Unbelievable classics in my view, non of that fancy 3d graphics, pixals and sprites forever.

Well untill Need for Speed Underground 3 comes out

What makes you think that they will make U3?

Anyway, the only old-school game I can remember playing is Mariokart on the SNES.

Old school?

well.. The fist game I remember was called TD Cars (not sure)
Really old... may be 1988? I was born in August 1984 ;) I remember the Corvette was there, and I always painted it in grey. It is funny how I still like soft colored cars.
And there was a Ferrari Testarossa. Can't remember more cars
But I remember there was a track builder... Really! You could make your own tracks, add obstacles in the road, jumps, tunnels etc.

Logically I havent got any screenshot :D

'LAC' (Lamborghini American Challenge) 1993. By Titus :D This makes me remember the game "Titus the fox" (offtopic...)

You were a driver who was sell a Lamborghini Diablo. Then you did races all over the USA making bets. It was cool.
Screen:

There was NOS in this game... yes yes NOS in the Lamborghini! But it was called 'Turbo'
And there was a mechanic upgrade called "Nitrous oxyde acceleration system"

The game size is only 620kb
I wonder which the size of 'TD cars' was

And I remember the Lotus game. There were 3cars... I remember the Lotus Esprit. You could select the music in your Alpine radio LCD before a race :D

Any1 remembers Screamers ? that was actually good, and fast for the time aswell

Also, ive been asked to remind everyone (well forced at spoon point) a game called Action Biker, the game were you had to ride around upgrading your bike, with the drag strip and the rollercoaster.

Just been playing that again, and its still as brick as it was then :/

God, I remember ''LAC''. I absolutely loved it. I was only a few years old back then, but it didn't hold me back.

Though I didn't really understand English.. And the game suddenly stopped working because there was a strange burn spot on the disc.-_-

We can all get misty eyed when we look back. Racing games during the late 80's early 90's all had a unique edge which made them stand out to the others.

Even the earlier 80's games like pole position and night driver. Hats off to the programmers who wanted to get there games noticed and not follow the set trends. Ones that made Death Rally, Super Sprint, Micro Machines - even all the F1 games all had there differances in gameplay and presentation.

gonna dig out my atari ST and play Cisco Heat, or Power Drift. Just to play summit differant for the time being.
