"A transition frequency separating two regions of operation, such as the crossover frequency of a speaker system between bass and midrange or between midrange and treble. Crossover networks divide audio signals into these separate frequency ranges to permit individual response adjustments within the ranges and to separate the signals driving the corresponding speaker elements. "
"A frequency divider. Crossovers are used in speakers to route the various frequency ranges to the appropriate drivers. Additionally, many crossovers contain various filters to stabilize the impedance load of the speaker and or shape the frequency response. Some crossovers contain levels controls to attenuate various parts of the signal. A passive crossover uses capacitors, coils and resistors, usually at speaker level. A passive crossover is load dependent (the transition may not be very smooth or accurate if a different speaker is substituted for the one the crossover was designed for). "

In simple terms, a crossover makes the right frequencies go to the right speakers. Correct me if I'm wrong, and I know I will be.
Let's say you have an audio setup with subwoofers for your lows and speakers for your mids and your highs. Yet, you have only one amp. A crossover will help that the lows go to the subs and the mids and highs go to the regular speakers.
