So are uniques different then what you buy in shops? If so, how do you get them? Do you have to be on a certain difficulty in career to unlock them? Any help is appreciated. thanks.

Yes, unique parts are different than what you buy out of the shops, including the visual ones. You unlock them by winning outrun races in explore mode, here is a chart you can look at to see what you unlock at different stages of the game.

This was taken from the FAQ:

Hoods 4 wins at stage 2
Performance (ECU, Turbo, or Brakes) 9 wins at stage 4
Performance (Weight reduction or Suspension) 6 wins at stage 5
Performance (Engine, Transmission, or Tires) 3 wins at stage 3
Rims 6 wins at stage 3
Spoiler 4 wins at stage 4
Vinyl 6 wins at stage 4
Widebody Kit 11 wins at stage 5

About the Widebody Kit, I didn't unlock it at stage 5 by the way... I unlocked it, at stage 4.
