Well, I know what you mean when you said too many players are unbeatable. I faced a similar situation when I first started out, but after finding the right places and, more importantly, the right people, my CS experiance has become 100x better
I have a regular set of guys (and a GIRL
) who I play with almost evryday on a server. And we just play for fun, which is the best part. i know I'm not going to get in CAL or CPL but that dosnt take away the fun aspects of the game.

Well, now Counter Strike is called an excellent game, now you may be wondering why?
It is a prime demonstration on how much athmosphere counts in a game, because graphics is shiznit (A part of what created the atmosphere) gameplay is even more shiznit (Can't argue with that, run in gun them down, win the match, rescue hostages and so on.)
And the levels are often small.
Now what keeps people playing it over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again? (Copy and pasted if you wondered.)
Well the answer is, it all has created an athmosphere in the game that is unique, probably has it due to HL1.
But anyways, with the right kind of atmosphere you can get any game to be good.
Graphics play a major part of it, NFSU 1 had a special one, problem is replicating and creating it.
Thats why NFSU 2 doesn't create an extremly good NFSU 1 feeling.
Of course previous experiences does also count, so most game makers try to build on the prevous game they made in the same series.
NFSU 2 just doesn't feel just as fun as NFSU even though the graphics are improved, maybe if they had the same as the first game they could perhaps have improved it.
Because of the athmosphere CS has created and carries, it will remain and interresting game for a long time to come though players will get tired of it (like me, hey I think most CS players and former players can't come and say they didn't like it when they started
I sure cannot)
Keeping the interrest in a such a simple game for longer periods is difficult, so athmosphere alone can't save a game from going bad, but it is an important factor.

Its a great game for sure. The best fps ever made. I used to be so addicted to that game until my computer got screwed up and I couldnt play it for a long time. When I got my comp running right I didnt go back to playing it cuz I knew I would get hooked again. What is the version everyone plays now? Still 1.6?
