Do you have XP home edition or Pro Edition.
But it is simple. First all your computers must be in the same domain\workgroup.
Then if you want to contact PC1 with PC2 then do this.
Doubble click on MY COMPUTER then in the adress bar type
\\PC1 and every folder you have shared must be visible (it can be that you must enter username and password to enter) So if you want to contact a specified folder you must share it or you won't have acces to it.
For PC1 use your PC name that your are trying to contact

with win 98 you could share the whole disk.Dragon-of-Rune wrote:Don't forget you can't share the intire HDD you must share every folder you want to share. So if you want to share the compleet HDD you must share every map one by one. Damm microsoft they must find something to share the compleet HDD this way it's anoying.
you can share a whole HDD or partition in Win XP
remember that 1st of all there is the C$ (or drivename plus the $) which is a hidden share...
2nd , you can put on a new share and give it a name you want. Cant help you right now exactly cos im at work, and im on a domain so sharing is different than on a workgroup
jemc, you can remove that silly "win xp simplified sharing" by going to:
control panel > folder options > view > last line of the list, uncheck it
hope you get the thing solved...
EDIT: jemc, specify the client OS and the server OS... meaning what windows versions are the both computers, and which is the one youre sharing the folders on it?

@ DoR: i get my knowledge through practical experience, not from books
@ jemc: i know ure not using a "server" in the sense of "Domain Controller"
the server is the PC which will have the folders on it to share (and hence serve) to others..
i take it both are win xp 2002, so make sure u have the Simplified Sharing crap checked off from BOTH computers.
make sure both have the same workgroup, check it from:
right click My Computer
select Properties
Computer Name tab
click on the button Change...
and see that BOTH pcs have the same worgroup name
now, if u make changes to workgroup name, reboot (referibly both pcs)
if u use static ip its better if you go via ip like so:
example ip of server pc is 192.168.0.1, so...
from other pc, click on Start > Run
type in \\192.168.0.1\c$ ---- or \\192.168.0.1\<sharename>
where <sharemame> is the network share name youve given to the folder or drive
you should be able to view the folder's contents easily
---
a quick suggestion:
ensure that both pcs have the same administrator password, and preferibly your user account which you use is the same in user name AND password, its a small thingy to check when using network browsing + resource sharing on a win xp environment on a workgroup basis...
[hope this helps
