That too is besides the point, because they had no way to forsee that the company they worked for would colapse 5 years down the line. I'd rather go on with the job rather than take the admitedly tasty 50K package but risk not being able to find another similarly paid job.Grez~Supra_RZ-S wrote:

Similarly paid? What, you mean like working full time at mcdonalds? Tradesman in a factory are by no means well paid.
As for foreseeing it, how cant you? The fact a huge corporation such as BMW saw it as a loss and felt the need to get rid of it should have been evidence enough that Rover was a failing badge.

1. Erm... I think a skilled facotry worker gets paid a bit more than a McDonalds employee, make that A LOT more (at least 4 times as much). 2. You say it in hindsight, but at the time, it may not have been so obvious. It took 5 years from BMW selling it to it colapsing. I'm sure the employees had faith (maybe unfounded) that the new owners would pull the company together.

Well I'm looking at it from the perspective of a Rover employee, not someone studying business, and from that perspective I don't believe it was obvious that the company would colapse, and even if it was, isn't it better to have faith than jump boat at the first sign of trouble? I don't think BMW would have offered such a high redundance package if they expected 5000+ people to take it. As for McDonalds, I know people who work there and it really isn't much more than the minimum wage at all.

In the UK, working at Mcdonalds will net you £5/hr as an 18 year old. The minimum wage (which I get during most hours as a barman is £4.6/hr. Thats 40p an hour more. Bearing in mind I work in 8 hour shifts, thats £3.20/day, which equates to £16/week, and £64/month (as my salary is monthly). Doesnt sound much, but you'd be surprised how a little sum of money like that will make a difference.
As for the employee bit, as an employee, I wouldnt be happy that my union can do nothing about the loss of 5000 peoples jobs. If the union cant stop it, there is obviously a big problem. Its nothing to do with faith. Having faith wont pay the bills or feed your kids.
Edit - I also forgot that as an employee, youre a stakeholder in the business. Rovers share prices have been steadily falling since BMW sold them, another sign that they were going under.

A union can't stop a company colapsing. The fact is when the company goes under, the jobs are gone, like it or not. Having faith is important becasue if you jump ship at the first sign of trouble you could be out of work for a long time, espeically if your trade is in the manafacturing industry. I've been arguing this for some many posts that I've lost count of what I was acutally arguing, which is that 5000 jobs is a big deal and it should be reported in the media. In a round-about way, youve got my point. My statement was that the initial loss of jobs was a major sign of trouble for remaining employees.
