What To Upgrade

Post by Gluttony »

ok my computer at the moment is running:

2.6 ghz pentium 4 processor
256mg saphhire radeon 9550
512 mg of Ram
and nealry everything like sound card and monitor awesome

my computer is really bugging me about when ever i play any game that was agerage made and year 2005 or higher the game runs very slow (not fps but load times and stuff) and i usually have to play a game for about 15 mins because i get massive jumping around and skipping all the time.

what i want to know is what should i upgrade in my machine. because the pc is decent, i dont put all video settings on high, actually i put them all on low and i constantly get this problem. can someone please help me out a bit and tell me what i should buy

Ya, the only decent thing there (to me) is the proccesor because of overclocking abilities on top of it's average speed, but that's just because I can afford a dual-core. The #1 thing you need is 1GB-2GB of RAM, ONLY if it is DDR 333 or DDR400, other than that... trash it. Since I'm sure it doesn't have DDR2. Next graphics card and then Hard drive. Now you've got a budget gaming rig! :P

I'd upgrade to 1 GB of RAM considering memory is dirt cheap right now (here at least) and then build a whole new machine when you have the cash.

new pc P4's are slow compared to the dual cores of today. but if you absolutely have to keep this one then i recommend getting 2gb of ram if your board supports it. i used to have a P4 and the board could only support up to 1gb of ram so dont go out and buy 2gb worth and then find out it doesnt work.

From a purely gaming standpoint the biggest factors are RAM and graphics card. As others have already said, memory is cheap at the moment so that should be the first thing to upgrade. Next would be the gfx card, the fastest AGP cards available at the moment (I think) are R1950 based cards starting at about 150€.

Faster than that would require an upgrade to PCIE, in your case would be wiser to get a completely new system instead of trying to up the current system (would require atleast a new mainboard and cpu, and a PCIE gfx card obviously).

Anything in excess of a 6600 GT/7600 GS/X1650 Pro is going to be overkill for that computer due to CPU limitation ...

a 6600 GT is a decent card, but a 7300 GT is cheaper and faster. if you can get a 7600 anything but dont waste too much money if your planning on a new comp soon. i was in your same position a couple months ago. i said screw it and bought a new comp

Perhaps comparing an overclocked 7300 GT to a reference-spec 6600 GT ... But reference vs. reference, the 6600 GT is faster ...

7300 GT:
350 MHz core, 8 Pixel Shaders, 4 Vertex Shaders = 2.8 GPixels/s and 350 MVertices/s
667 MHz 128-bit memory = 10.7 GB/s of memory bandwidth

6600 GT:
500 MHz core, 8 Pixel Shaders, 3 Vertex Shaders = 4.0 GPixels/s and 375 MVertices/s
900 MHz 128-bit memory = 14.4 GB/s of memory bandwidth

the 7300 still seems like a better deal since it costs almost 100 dollars less at stores like best buy

Best Buy over-prices their products, they may have good deals once in a while but not very often. The only way you can get a good deal is to buy from an online store like Newegg or TigerDirect.

I'd say go for a 7600GT - if you've got PCIe slots they're pretty cheap now (about £70), AGP run about £100 and require less power than my old 9800 PRO. Best £100 I spent on my PC (P4 3.2 1GB RAM) - put off its replacement for the foreseeable future!

Yeah, really ... You're comparing a highly-overclocked 7300 GT to a reference 6600 GT ...

350 MHz Core + 667 MHz GDDR2 Memory vs. 500 MHz Core + 1400 MHz GDDR3 Memory

Also, that card costs more than a 6600 GT AND it isn't even available in North America ...

Again, reference vs. reference, the 6600 GT wins hands down ...

GJ, you found A 7300 GT ...

You didn't find the Inno3D 7300 GT which runs at twice the speed of a reference 7300 GT on Newegg ...

yes there was alos that highly overclocked 7300 but then there was that red one which was stock
i believe though that the 7300 GT being tested was DDR3, and ive heard the 7300 has better overclocking abilitites than a 6600 GT. over all id say the 7300 is a better buy because it is cheaper, has huge overclocking abilities, is less outdated than a 6 series, is based on 7600 architecture, has the ability to unlock extra shaders and pipelines for even more performance. also whichever one you buy both are obsolete in todays world so shoot for atleast a 7600 series
