NFSU1: Neon Editing Guide By alexhull24
1) Open the file TEXTURES.bin of your desired car with BinTex
2) Find the neon file. eg. SKYLINE_NEON
3) Extract it to the directory of your choice, and open with Photoshop or similar.
4) You will see quite a small image with four 'blobs' of gray colour. These represent the four neon lights around the car.
5) You can change the whole image to what you want, eg. change one light to text, or a logo.
6) You must make sure that the hue and saturation of the new image are 0. This means it is more or less grayscale.
7) The brightness has to be less than about 90, or otherwise the game will crash when you go to select your profile if it is the skyline you have changed because the eddie's skyline appears at the start. For othervehicles it may crash when they appear, or just before if the brightness is too high.
Save your correct image as DDS in the DXT1 ARGB (1bit ALPHA) format.
9) Use bintex to import the image into TEXTURES.bin, overwriting the existing SKYLINE_NEON (or whatever car).
10) Save in BinTex, and your'e ready to launch the game! If it crashes go back to step 6 and try again.
A tip for editing: try not to go to the edges of the image, as when it appears ingame, it can sometimes appear with 'lines' around the neon. This looks quite bad, especially if it is in a bright colour of neon.
Hope this helps you guys. Please post any more questions or thoughts below.
Look at the attached image for an example I made earlier today.

sorry, forgot to mention that the darker the image is, the less bright the neon will appear.
Here is the example picture:

Broken Neon
Here is my first 'proper' neon download. Please comment on whether you like it or not, or any other ideas. Credit the author if you couple this with your own vinyl. Thanks...

OK, the neon file is not in the skyline vinyls.bin, but it is in the textures.bin file of the skyline.
Also, if you are going to put writing onto the neon, you must first flip the writing horizontally as the neon is 'projected' onto the ground.
In Photoshop this is easy:
Select Text Layer>Edit>Transform>Flip Horizontally
Hope this works.
