NFS UG 2 opinion from Juice Games' Project Manager

Post by 2furio »

The interview is about Juiced but there was one interesting question:

GI: What do you think of Need For Speed Underground 2?

Badger: Actually, I’m kind of glad that the free roaming system didn’t work that well. We’ve considered doing that for the sequel but after seeing what’s happened, it seems like it’s compromised the experience. In the end the races take part on tracks, so why not just focus on that? It’s a cool game and I can understand why it sells so many copies. But this game seems a little more hardcore. We’ve really tried to make the whole car modding as deep as possible and the game just seems more serious.

So what does he mean by not free roaming feature not working? It's not a big deal but it sure made Underground 2 a little bit more fun. I also don't get how is Jucied be more hardcore? Underground 2 had hip hop language, spinners, hydraulics...all kinds of in depth stuff.

Well, think realistically about it... Would a project manager for one game, really say that another game is better than his/her own? :P I think the free-roam worked extremely well, because outruns are a way to pull up your rep in real life as well. For example: You pull up at a stoplight, chakkenge someone, and then blow their doors off, the person you beat will get the word out on the street to watch out for you. So, free-roam, IMO, is a realistic, and fun concept.

It's not about loving or hating it, but this guy says it didn't work. I want to know, if it didn't work, then why is the game such a hit and what didn't work? Sure it gets boring because the city is not as active as Vice City but the free roam is perfect because it ties the races together and makes everything flow like real life.

That game sounds pretty good. I dont know about the whole damage thing hurting your cars performance though.

lmao. That guy......"Im actually glad it didnt turn out well" XD

Juiced is a mix of arcade and simulation. They are trying to appeal to both nfs arcade customization fans and well as the simulation real fans.

As Juiced has been shaky on releasing, they might do good but not as good as NFSU 2 has done, despite the number or errors and bugs the game has

free-roam kicks ass!

and they have the music and the dub culture in there on top of tuning, its what underground street racing is about. only one i can think is more competitive than juiced is MC3:Dub which has more cars and may be able to get the theme down a little better than ug2

I'm sure by 'hardcore', he means it's a more hardcore gaming experience. Interesting interview - thanks for posting!

That's exactly what I meant. But sadly, that's what the import scene is all about. :P
Also, check out these new screens of Juiced: http://www.worthplaying.com/article.php?sid=22866
In my opinion, the games looks much better. If only they could change the name.

Personally, I hate the free roam because it bores the pants off me. I prefered the way NFSU1 worked, but then I'm in the minority. I'm an all-action kind of guy!

Each to their own opinion. Although I have to say the demo of Juiced I played was crap as I kept constantly spinning out (and I've driven light, powerful rear-wheel drive cars in real life!) Hope the full game is better.

Maybe he means Juiced is more hardcore because the women in it are naked? We live in hope

Dani, where are you.... You should be part of this since you like Juiced more than NFSU2. :)

If liking Juiced more than NFSU2 is the only requirement, I am probably qualified to state my opinion as well ...
Free Roam in NFSU2 was ok, but nothing more than that. I am personally glad Juiced focusses on tracks rather than 1 big city. It gets tedious to have to drive through it all to get to an event - take for instance the magazine shots ... typically up in the hilly area.
I wish people didn't take the 'gaming experience' on matters like music and rap. The 'gaming experience' is about driving your car, not what you listen to, having spinners, having hydraulics and the biggest mofo stereo in the trunk! Those are all candy for some, and just plain annoying for others like me. What is this game about? Racing. What is meant by gaming experience and hardcore? That the cars handle a hell of a lot more realistically than NFSU2. What does this mean in turn? That it isn't every one-timer n00b that can step up the line and hope to win. Since it isn't like that and thus like NFSU2, it naturally attracts lesser crowds of more simulation-oriented fanboys. You can tell NFSU2 is a game. You need drive 10 metres in a random car to know it. With Juiced you come closer to the real thing. Sure, that's me talking about what I value, and what THEY weigh the most in this game, the driving experience. The tuner culture with pimping out the ride, is only a secondary matter.

When is "Juiced" to be released?

When i look at the screenshots it seems they dont have a variety of rims to choose from e.g Lezani?

The graphics also dont seems too impresive...i hope im wrong, becuase i really need a new tuning game.

juiced will be released in may. The car models have more polygons in their wheels than NFSU2 would have on a whole car ... Saying the graphics are crap equals to saying you have no eyes to look with, else you wouldn't say it ;). Juiced has 50+ cars, 60+ 3d part REAL manufacturers like Velside and Bomex, and I am sure it has a wide variety of rims.

Dude, just press the button under each video. It opens a new window, where there is written in little under the media player: Click for save, or rightclick or something ... follow the procedure
