Im still a noob at this but with some practice, I hope to be at least decent. Here is what I managed in the past couple of days and thanks to Ibi on how to render properly.

Earlier today I started on my first real model from scratch. This stuff is hard and with my lack of knowledge (n00bish) I got stuck. Luckily, Ibi helped me through some of it. Here is my WiP. I hope to put it in a game mod or sumthing.

:P

like I said before, its a good start, you got the basic shape of it perfect and you fixed up a lot of unneccesery polygons. I think what you should do is get loads of reference images of the AK 47 and try study them, maybe plan out how you would model certain details before you start getting into detail.

If this is going to be a game model, then your photoshop skill better be good, for me at least texturing takes just as long as modelling even longer sometimes, because you're likely to take the texture back and forth from 3DS Max to the Image editing software all the time. Good Luck :D

Thought I might share my latest WIP. This is an environment that I'm currently working and I need to finish the modelling (and there's a lot left to do), unwrap the whole dam thing, texture all the bloody objects, export them one by one in Unreal Engine, fix the lighting in Unreal (which is shiznit!) all by the 16th of January..... I should really stop doing things in the last minute

Why Unreal, and whats it for?

You should have just made the models and exported them to the Unreal editor, then make the map from there. Maybe it is easier.

EDIT : Played around some more with the lighting and material options.

Yo, Ibi, I don't want to interfere in your work but I think that you can put a barrel or too next to those pines.

Looking good so far.

Yeah, heres the link for the 8.0 version, its only a 30-day trial but its better than nothing:http://nct.digitalriver.com/fulfill/0049.034.

I need some help, when I press m to go into materials there is no Raytrace Basic Parameters menu.I am using 3ds Max 8, is there any way to get it there.

Heres a picture of what my materials box looks like:

Well good luck Weedman. :)

Ive started on a new model to practice by myself. Im adding detail as I go, but some of these controls are making act like Ive never acted before since my toddler years when bullys were still in existence.

So you've started on another object, which is a good idea - to do some modelling for a bit, do something else from fresh. The more practice you get, the better at 3D you'll become. Remember young one - wax on, wax off...

Well thought I'd show some more updates on the environment :)

Why unreal? Well that's what the brief says, so I can't argue with that. And I want to build the entire environment in 3DS Max first, do some really nice renders with very good lighting for portofolio piece. Then I plan to export them one by one, except for the walls and platform which will be made using BSP in unreal.

BTW, if you guys got any suggestion for the environment, then let me know - I spend a lot of time just rotating around scene thinking of what to do, so some of your ideas could help me out loads :D

Add some metal barrels, pipes, and random metal junk on that platform. Unless fancy clean aliens live there, make it look inhabited. :D
