Traveling cross-state, for example. Say, the aircraft used is a Boeing 757-400. That's 230 people not including crew. Say, you cross 4 states (est. 500 miles). 230 (or even half that number) cars would produce significantly more CO2 than the flight.
Fusion power is in its infancy, with sustanable fusion reactions currently the stuff of science fiction. Hydrogen power IS much more efficiant, but the problem is the production of Heavy Water for hydrogen ions, which is complex.
