I appreciate the response.
Racing wings have been proven to be ineffective at under 140mph, the downforce they create is useless for traction up until that point. Also, the drag coefficient they create up until that point would, in theory, slow the car down if anything. As for decals, hey if you like shopping lists down your door, be my guest. The ONLY reason a car should have decals is for paid sponsors, not because you have a Mugen floor mat and want to show off about it.
Ahem..I didn't mention anything about performance, I assume you know that that doesn't matter to me from the Bugatti thread. I don't care about downforce or any of that, I'm very much into appearance. Yes, maybe the decals aren't needed, but I didn't say they are, I just said they are used a lot where I come from, to show which companies are behind the production of their ride, in cruises and car shows. With some companies, they insist upon having their decal on the car somewhere, maybe the top of the windscreen. I didn't say I liked that, I just said it happens.
Mustang - I cant believe you cant actually see anything wrong with someone putting a 'Type-R' badge on an American muscle car. Aside from the fact that the Mustang is from the USA, and the Type-R heritage hails from Japan in completely different markets, and aside from the fact that the Type-R badge has been the calling card of ricers for at least the last decade, its trying to make the car appear to be something it isnt.
I guess I'm not that bothered about the mustang really. Not a muscle person. It really wouldn't bother me seeing that, as muscle doesnt run through my blood, and well, I don't live in the US, so am not really a fan of that horrible lump. Unattractive to me. I know about the two cars, no need to be patronising now. I think you're being quite pedantic about the whole situation. Are you really that bothered about one little badge? Yes, I know, it's about what the badge represents, but, it's their car, not yours.
Which in turn comes to my NSX argument. That NSX is built by Honda, not Ferrari. It was developed by Ayrton Senna, its already been acclaimed as Hondas greatest ever achievment. It is NOT a Ferrari, especially an F50. In comparison, it has a 6 cylinder engine which is very mildly tuned, and about the only thing comparable to a ferrari is its MR layout.
In the UK, conversions are a popular part of the tuning culture. I can count the umpteenth time I have seen a cover car with either:

- a whole body conversion - e.g. a civic converted into a bmw
- a headlight conversion - e.g. a punto headlight conversion on a saxo
- 2 cars in one - e.g. a nissan skyline and a nissan almera.

In the UK, people get big kudos for performing these conversions, hence the cars dominate the covers of Fast Car, Max Power, redline, this is the situation over here. Enclosed below is a picture of the latter, the 'skymera' which I cut out and stuck on my wall. It's a remarkable feat, and has won a feature in Fast Car, one of the best modified car magazines across Europe.

Now I hope you see where I'm coming from. It's totally different over here. You just needed to know that.

I'm sure its already been said in this thread, but here goes

RaceInspiredCosmeticEnhancements

All i can say is that you could ask 50 different people about what "rice" means to them, and all 50 responses would be different. I see purely visual cars, big kits and "phat" stereos, covered in stickers as unappealing, because they are still stock underneath (oops i forgot the mad cat-back exhaust for that awesome racing drone). But there are people that make big money getting sponsored by audio company's for promoting there products. Because car enthusiasts are all around the world, from all different cultures/ways of life, there is always going to be people who don't appreciate other rides. Nothing is going to change that, so its really one of those arguements that will keep going on and on and on, without actually getting anywhere. Much like trying to ice-skate up a hill.

No further questions.

Oh, and Im from Leeds, UK (The RS13 in my sig is a UK spec car). The magazines you outlined are heralded by ''boy-racers'' largely, although Ill admit Max Power is trying to shred its image of a chav mag. That said, I dont listen to the opinions of magazines who promote street racing, and practicing drifting on roundabouts. :roll:

Amda1:
I'm just re-iterating what's been said here but:
1) Any form of non-aerodynamic cosmetic enhancement CAN be considered rice. Though usually this is limited to big wings, badly fitting body kits, ect ect, it can also encompass things like smoothing, which is popular in the euro-scene.
2) The complete changing of a car's bodywork is as rice as you can get. As Grez has said, that NSX is now an NSX trying to be something not nessesarily better, but with more of a reputation and which will get more looks. That's what rice is all about; getting what they think are admiring looks from passers buy without realising that in all actual fact they look like a penis.

I admit defeat :)
Wikipedia wrote:"Ricing" (a term usually not used by the modifier himself) a vehicle is meant to emulate the aesthetic work of independent automotive car tuning companies who modify more than just appearance, and to give an appearance of greater ability than the car actually has. Ricing is generally looked down upon amongst people who perform engine tuning and other performance racing modifications.

Common aftermarket modifications in this style can include but are not limited to:

* Body modifications
o Aerodynamic-seeming or creatively-designed body kits, often with little function
o Wings and spoilers that serve no useful function, possibly increasing drag and decreasing traction.
o Carbon fiber hoods (sometimes fiberglass replicas made to look like carbon fiber, or just decorative self adhesive plastic with carbon fiber look)
o Non-functional hood scoops and roof scoops.
o Excessively large wheels ("rims") (for example chromed, or "dubs", as well as Spinners) that often decrease acceleration due to higher rotational inertia. Handling is also often made worse by the extra unsprung weight.
o Improperly lowered suspension, such as stock springs shortened by heating or cutting. Or from not getting a proper alignment resulting in excessive negative camber.
o Bumper canards fitted to the front bumper.
* Aesthetics
o Bright paint or interior, frequently in contrasting colors
o Decals and stickers for aftermarket parts not actually present on the vehicle
o Badging from other higher-performance vehicles or JDM tuning companies like Mugen, Nismo, etc.
o Digital turbo, consisting of speakers installed under the car that emulate the sound of a turbo engine.
* A loud, free-flowing exhaust system with a large cylindrical resonator at the rear of the car, known as a "fart cannon", a "coffee can" and many other colorful names. Frequently a short large-diameter piece is added to the end of the stock exhaust to provide the appearance of a true free-flowing system without any actual performance enhancement.
* Lighting
o Decorative neon and LED lighting in addition to the regular head/tail lamps and brake/turn signals, such as lighted windshield washer nozzles and tire valve caps, underbody neon lighting ("hover lights"), etc.
o "Altezza"-style lights or "Altezzas" (equally popular and known as "Lexus" lights in Europe), which have the colored light sources and reflective bodies contained within chrome housings and clear lenses. The term "Altezza" comes from the JDM (Japanese Domestic Market) Toyota Altezza, known in the US as the Lexus IS300 and Europe as the Lexus IS200. Toyota continues to use "Altezza" style tail lights on various Lexus models, including the RX "crossover SUV" and ES sedan
o Super-bright headlight bulbs, sometimes of illegal specification and poorly aligned; colored bulbs, also often illegal, which are used for turning signals, side-markers, etc.
* Car has any of the aforementioned modifications, yet appears to have sloppy workmanship or has not been properly cared for (dirty, parts of the car with smashed or dented body work, etc.)

This is not meant to be a complete list of known ricing characteristics, nor do all rice burners have or are limited to these modifications. Almost all of these examples have practical performance or racing applications, but when these modifications are made improperly, done for pretense of being fast, or for the sake of visual appeal, the car in question will likely end up labeled as "rice".

Many of these modifications are nearly always found on high spec, comprehensively modified professional racing cars, but they are added as finishing touches to other extensive modification.
Wow I had no idea that most cars in those magazines are considered rice by engine tuners, and, well, by most people, and if wikipedia says it then it has to be true. I always thought that rice was a classic stereotype, like the one below:

Image

And yeh, I don't support the antics of Fast Car or other similar magazines, I just love the cars. Well, I used too...

I am looking at the whole arguement from a whole different perspective now, it has made me open my eyes and realise what plonkers are in these magazines. Thanks for helping me to see the light :)

"wikipedia says it then it has to be true"
Fool

"I always thought that rice was a classic stereotype"
Understandable, but those cars aren't actually rice. They're made to take the weewee out of REAL ricers; same with all the Japanese "funny" cars that everyone calls rice. it's really just people with a sense of humour.

That wiki explanation is nearly spot on as to what any real tuner (some one who TUNES cars to make them go better, not someone who drives a honda civic with a bodykit) see's as a ricer

That riced AE86 was intentional. T-Mobile made it to make fun of ricers.

Im not saying it wasnt true, I just dont see what T-Mobile would get out of such a stunt. Its not exactly great PR, and for advertising purposes it only applies to a very small niche market.
